Should someone compare the current survival methods to Darwin’s theory? 

Absolutely, this is the true definition and picture of “survival of the fittest”. On page 16-17 it mentions how Shin, eats all of his mothers along with his food after she goes to work. Prisoners are fed corn porridge, pickled cabbage, and cabbage soup provided they meet their daily quota at work, otherwise they have to spend the rest of the day hungry. Of course no amount of pickled cabbage or soup will fill anyone, so they must go looking for insects and rats just to feel full. They also go through cow dung, to find any kernels of corn. I believe there are pictures, but I might censor them. I understand it might be hard to see, but we must be aware of the current conditions of these poor souls.

How do the prisoners react to the rest of the world? 

I honestly think they would have the same reaction has any North Korean would, they were raised to believe that North Korea is the sole country, that makes up the entire world. All which have to do with the propaganda the government entices it’s people to believe. They sound shocked that there are more countries elsewhere, I mean sure. They know about the United States and South Korea, but as imperialists. They also do not know whether the earth is flat or round. They also believe that society is very much like how the conditions are at the camp, and that everyone lived in prison camps.

Do you believe the punishments the prisoners had to endure were because of rehabilitation or simply the guards overusing their power of authority? 

I believe it has more to do with rehabilitation, along with the guards being in constant fear. Political prisoners in these labour camps, are seen as enemies of the country, their grandparents may of colluded South Korea during the Korean War in the 1950s. In addition to that, those who are admitted to Camp 14 are never able to leave, as they continue on with generations of punishment.

Harrowing Truth

Escape from Camp 14, what a harrowing and captivating read. I purchased this book after a recommendation from a friend and what a real eye opener. I was aware of the horrendous state North Korea was (and still is) in but holy shit, after reading this book I was left gobsmacked. This book is a true account of a young boy called Shin who was born in a labour camp after his parents were imprisoned for so called crimes against the Kim dynasty. Where I spent my childhood climbing trees and building dens, this young boy was going through similar experiences that the Nazis enforced in their concentration camps. It goes on talk about his gruelling childhood filled with beatings, torture, back stabbing and degrading sessions and this continues right up until his mid 20’s when he eventually escapes after learning about the outside world from two influential men called Uncle and Park. The inhumane experiences that I have just described only scratches the surface of what this poor chap and other humans were made to go through. 

If you’ve read 1984 you’ll understand the anger it generates when you read it. Well, this is very much the same but a true story. There are heaps of pictures of that chubby buffoon Kim Jong Il across the social media world right now but people need to understand what he and his family have done and continue to do. Families are taken from their homes and imprisoned or murdered. It was all over the news recently after Kim Jong Il apparently executed one of his advisers (by means of anti-aircraft shells) for disobeying orders, how mental can one be?

Im not going to go off on a tangent about how barbaric and inhuman the Kim Regime is, you can see that for yourself but on the off chance that you read this piece I would ask that you take a moment to think about what some people are going through this very moment. Cheers,
