You know how long of a drive to Toronto it is supposed to be. It never takes the same amount of time. There is always an Ikea.
There is a man, in the Home Hardware, smoking a cigarette. "How're ya now?" he asks. "It's illegal to smoke inside." you say. "How're ya now?" he asks. You don't know how to answer. You never have.
You see five Bell service vans driving down the 401. They are all in French, and their plates say Quebec. You don't know why they're here. Your lack of cell signal begins to concern you.
A farmer died yesterday. Run over by his own tractor, they say. You simply nod and agree. It's safer that way.
Once, your neighbour tried to investigate a different farmer's death. You don't remember who lived there before your new neighbour.
The island off the coast has a large amount of wind turbines on it. They are never all spinning at the same time. You feel like they watch you.
The OPP releases an official statement, stating a recently reported death was an accident. This is the truth. They claim that the method is being kept secret out of respect for the dead, but you know better.
You went for a hike in the woods with your partner. You don't think it was your partner who came back out with you. Even you don't feel like the same person you once were.
The fields of soy plants sway in the breeze. There is no breeze. You do not acknowledge this.
You pass the same chip truck four times on the way to work. You pass the same one six times on the way home. No one will tell you how many there truly are, but you just think that they don’t know.
Sometimes, you think you see celebrities walking the street, towards the local pizza place. You do not acknowledge them. They are never who you think. It is safer not to interact.
When you move here, they'll tell you to never go into the woods alone. To never go into the woods at night. They will not tell you why. After your first night here, you will understand as they do.

-You know not to drive in the suburbs at night. If you do you might see the people inside. If they see you, then you will have to get to know them. You do not want to know them. You do not remember when they moved in. You do not remember when you moved in. -there is a new Tim Hortons down your street. It wasn't there yesterday. You think of your neighbours and how much you miss them as you drink your morning coffee. It tastes like hair. -When summer leaves and winter is here you have to take your coat out of the basement. It needs washing after all it's time down there. You are thankful that blood doesn't stain brown clothing. -the mayor has been mayor for a long time. Everyone says he is good for the town. When was the last election? No one can tell you. He is good for the town -There where a lot of mosquitoes last night. You had to go in early from the bbq. You tried to drown out your friends screams with your pillow. You cannot. -Everyone has a cottage they go to on long weekends. You do not know where they got the cottage from. They do not know where they got their cottage from. You must go to your cottage this weekend. The cottage demands it. -It is summer. It is hot. "It isn't that hot" you tell yourself. You smile as you walk down the street. "I live in Canada. Canada is cold". You ignore the raccoon corpse sizzling on the road. You continue walking. You must make it to the farmers market. You must. But you know that many of the others waking with you won't. You continue smiling.

Myself and a friend (tagged below) went and looked at the aurora borealis, since it was visible where we live tonight. Looks like watermelon tourmaline. Photos courtesy of @void-ravioli
