Rec: Enthralling, creepy, insidiously addictive. I was glued to the screen for every word of this thrilling, complex casefic in which John has to take the lead when Sherlock begins suffering from blackouts and seizures and behaving erratically. Of course his mysterious malady is intrinsically wrapped up in the murder investigation, and as the answers start coming to light, it turns out that the roots are much deeper and further back than anyone suspected.

The story is brilliantly plotted from start to finish, drawing on events and details in series 4 and exploring their implications in a way that did them proper justice rather than using them as red herrings or leaving them as half-thought out, unrealistic handwaves. And as the story progresses, we find that there have been other developments on a personal level since Sherrinford which complicate the situation and make finding a resolution even more imperative.

I thought this was particularly good at conveying the urgency and emotions at play, from Sherlock’s frustration and fear, to John’s disquietude and overarching care and devotion, to Mycroft’s genuine concern and regret. Amidst the scary medical incidents, ill-conceived secret-keeping, lurking nightmares and lies, the moments of steadying domesticity, quiet comfort, and acts of friendship shine brightly as a reminder of what it is all for in the end.

Warnings (amply given in the fic itself) for suicide and ideation.

Rec:This is such a fun fic, and I’m afraid the low rating might be making people hesitate but I’m here to tell you: don’t! This delivers fully on all the Johnlock, and if you’re looking for your hit of oxytocin, it has some very nice snogging and cuddling, and maybe even a bit more. Along with some really quite good (sad) angst to get those tear ducts running.

This a fusion with the movie “Return to Me” a rom-com whose premise I don’t want to give away in case it might be considered a spoiler. I think it’s fine to read the fic if you know what’s going to happen but if you go in blind, you might get a little extra shiver of delight/shock at the turn of events. The transfer of the story to the BBC Sherlock setting is done perfectly in any case. The recasting hits every nail on the head (I loved the unorthodox choice for Sherlock’s blind date) and the other necessary adjustments to the plot are completely natural and fitting. It’s a very sweetly told story of an alternate meeting and falling in love, with all the requisite bonding over corpses, takeaway, CCTV surveillance, and helpful friends and siblings.

There was no recognition there, just wild animal fear. Time stood still for an eternal few seconds, and Sherlock took a shaky breath. “John—” Spell broken, John spun and bolted back into the woods.Still heaving for air, Sherlock took off after him.

Little did Sherlock know that the vapor to which he exposed John was a bioweapon— containing a bioengineered hybrid virus. Now, John is fighting for his life in the early stages of encephalitis, and it’s down to Sherlock and a team of scientists to save him, if they can only find him first. Sherlock needs to keep fear and guilt from getting the better of him if he’s to salvage his relationship with John—and that’s assuming the love of his life even survives….

Rec: This is a sickfic alternate ending to THOB in which John contracts a scary virus at Baskerville. What ensues is an intensely angsty race against the clock to save his life, followed by even more angst in the fraught recovery period as John pieces together what happened. It’s a terrific (and at times terrifying) drop into the depths of John’s and Sherlock’s deepest fears, both regarding each other and their own personal demons. I especially liked seeing the parallels between the two men’s behavior, despite their very different mental states: for both of them, their paramount priority was to make sure the other one was safe, even if that meant doing quite irrational and even dangerous things. An exciting, fast-paced story with lots of juicy medical realism, tough love, men being idiots (in love), and good friends going the extra mile.

As an extra added bonus, this fic can be purchased in book form for a limited time.
