Hello fellow bloggers, and welcome to the first ever Canadian Gold Rush podcast. This podcast is an extension of the Canadian Gold Rush blog, which features an analysis of the Canadian Olympic team's performances within the 2014 Winter Olympic Games held in Sochi, Russia. Ladies and gentlemen, I am your host John Moynahan lets get this thing started
First off I just wanted to apologize for any confusion as this blog has undergone a dramatic transformation over the past week changing from a generic sports talk blog to a team Canada Olympic focused blog. Having run into a number of difficulties with the previous idea, I’m hoping that this one will run much smoother.
Now lets get into what we’re all here for. That's right, Team Canada! Now this can be chalked up as one proud Canadian boosting about his own nation, regardless, something is to be said about the success the Canadian team has had thus far. Now mind you the recording of this podcast is being done on February 11th, 2014 which is Day 4 of the Olympics and to this point we are in the lead of not just total Medals but both total and gold medal counts. For those who don’t truly understand the gravity of this feat, Day 4 of the 2014 Sochi Winter games marks the first time Canada has ever lead both the total and gold medal standings on any given day in Olympic history. Now experts warn us not to get ahead of ourselves, reminding us of previous Olympic games when Canada had slow starts and then caught fire toward the end due to the back ended schedule of events that were particularly strong events for Canada. Keeping in mind these new events such as slope style and team figure skating which are sports that favour Canada have come early on the schedule. This podcast features a phone call from a proud Canadian by the name of Randy.
Now we all know, like Randy us Canadians take a lot of pride in our athletic achievements. And to put up the type of results we are especially this early in the Olympic games is nothing short of amazing. But what I think is even more amazing, amidst all the success on the podium we have so much more to be proud of as Canadians. Even before the start of the Olympic games, we as Canadians took offense to the anti-gay and lesbian laws in Russia. We even went to the extent of a releasing video commercial by the Canadian Institute of Diversity and Inclusion in response to these Russian laws. If that wasn’t enough for you to be proud of, three time Olympian Denny Morrison did not qualify for the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, however because of Denny’s performances leading up to the Olympics fellow speed skater Gilmore Junio elected to give his qualifying spot to Denny Morrison. In turn, Denny Morrison won the Silver medal in Men’s 1000m speed skating. As a token of his appreciate Denny Morrison has begun a twitter campaign to select Junio as Canada’s flag bearer during the Sochi closing ceremonies. And if those two stories weren’t enough then how about Canadian cross-country ski coach Justin Wadsworth running onto the slope in order to help Russian skier Anton Gafarov who’s ski had fallen apart during the race. Wadsworth ran to the aid of Gafarov with an extra ski helping the Russian skier complete his Olympic race with dignity.
