Bowling is a sport that many people love because it can be played by anyone – whether you are a professional player or just wanting to play the sport for the fun of it.  Bowling is characterized by its unique chameleon effect being both a competitive sport and a fun-filled recreational game. Delving into the topic of bowling basics, we always come across topics about the bowling pins. Terms such as, 'short pin', 'swishing 7 pin', 'barmaid' or 'duckpins' are likely to be encountered by bowlers.  Bowling pins basically function as the pieces to be hit when executing strikes. Here are several things you should know about the pins.

Types of Bowling Pins In bowling, pin is the formal name given to the target of the bowling ball when executing a strike or hit. When playing the sport, you should be aware of what type of pin you are hitting. The game actually depends on the pins you use.  For instance, a 10-pin game features ten pins on the end of the lane, which the player should aim in order to win a game. Other terms referring to pins are 'duckpins', which is a smaller version of your typical pin, 7pins or candlepins, which has a candle-like pin on the lane.

Standard Bowling Pin Sizes Bowling pins have different sizes - some are big and some are small, still depending on the type of game being played. The United States Bowling Congress gave specifications on the size and weight of typical pins. The congress approved that each pin should weigh not more than 1.6 kilogram and should be 4.75 inches wide and 15 inches tall. Although, there are variations of sizes, most bowling games are played using your typical 15- inch tall pins.
