When South Korean ruling party lawmaker Koh Seung-duk decided to run for Seoul education superintendent, he probably expected a hotly contested race. What he probably didn't expect was that his 27-year-old daughter from his first marriage would land the most damaging blows against him.
On May 31, Candy Koh turned to Facebook to rip her dad a new asshole. She accuses him of cutting off all contact with her and her younger brother after their mother took them to New York to attend school. Candy Koh was 11 at the time.
In both Korean and English-language posts, the younger Koh urges Seoul voters not to elect her dad superintendent when they go to the polls June 4:
As a former citizen of Seoul still with many friends who reside there, I trust that you will make the right decision for the future of your city and choose a candidate better suited for the position: someone who truly cares about the Seoul’s education system and someone who begins by caring for those nearest to him, his own children.
Candidate Koh claimed during a press conference Sunday that his daughter's post may have been part of a "smear campaign" orchestrated by his main rival, incumbent superintendent (and fellow conservative) Moon Yong-lin. But Candy Koh's poignant Facebook post doesn't sound petty or vindictive. Instead, she comes off as a daughter who was deeply wounded by her father's abandonment.
