meme :      50 .      ... out   of   love .

          SHE   WAS   WOKEN   BY      the   shift   of   the   mattress   beneath   her   &&   the   creaking   of   old   bed   springs   as   her   twin   moved .      ruby   eyes   flickered   open   as   she   began   to   roll   over ,      back   towards   the   girl   she   shared   the   bed   with .      parent’s   neglect   for   once   helpful   when   it   came   to   knowing   when   her   twin   had   woken   up .      when   she   was   bothered   with   something .      was   such   a   light   sleeper   that   it   was   plenty   easy   to   wake   her   up .

          it   was   why   she   was   awake   now      —      looked   over   to   mukuro ,      words   a   soft ,      sleepy   mumble .      “      mm ?      what’s   wrong ?      ”      but ,      as   she   spoke   she   could   already   feel   arms   wrapping   around   her   as   the   other   girl   curled   into   her       —      an   embrace   that   would   be   returned   without   thought .      shifted   slightly   to   make   herself   more   comfortable   once   again .      “      did   you   have   a   nightmare   or   something ?      ”

          that   was   typically   what   it   was   this   late   at   night .      (      what   time   was   it ,      anyways ?      a   glance   back   over   her   shoulder   towards   the   window   in   their   room   let   in   little   light       —      sky   outside   nearly   pitch - black .      probably   well   after   midnight ,      but   not   yet   three .      )      a   predictable   enough   problem   that   she'd   learned   how   to   solve   easily   enough .      though   normally   she   tried   to   catch   them   before   the   other   woke   up .      but   it   was   fine   this   way .

meme :      touch      —      a   gentle   touch   like   rubbing   their   back ,      hugging   them ,      holding   their   hand .

          SHE’D   BEEN   WAITING   THERE      for   at   least   an   hour       —      albeit   had   been   purposefully   early .      mask   covered   her   mouth   &&   nose   in   an   attempt   to   conceal   her   identity ,      albeit   admittedly   still   dressed   more   fashionably   than   perhaps   a   layman ,      despite   forgone   heels   &&   hair   taken   down   from   her   signature   pigtails .      not   to   hide   from   the   one   she   waited   for ,      but   rather   from   any   fans   that   might   see   her   &&   want   a   picture   or   an   autograph .

          despite   her   focus   on   her   phone ,      she   was   still   very   aware   of   what   was   going   on   around   her .      the   occasional   passersby   or   visitor ,      though   it   wasn’t   very   busy ,      being   the   middle   of   the   day   &&   bordering   on   the   colder   months .      a   few   couples   who   passed   by .      but   she   wouldn’t   bother   looking   up   until   she   caught   sight   of   the   other’s   familiar   form .      different   than   the   last   time   she’d   seen   her ,      but   that   was   to   be   expected   when   that   had   been   years   ago .      could   already   sense   that   something   had   changed .

          but   before   she   could   pinpoint   just   what   that   difference   was ,      the   other’s   gaze   caught   her   own       —      a   flicker   of   recognition   evident   within   them .      cell   phone   would   be   shoved   into   her   jacket   pocket ,      brows   furrowed   slightly   as   she   caught   the   blur   of   the   other       —      only   to   be   knocked   back   by   the   weight   of   another   barreling   into   her .      then ,      arms   around   her       —      caught   herself   against   the   stone   boundary   around   the   nearby   foliage .      didn’t   really   know   what   to   think .      too   many   years   apart   had   apparently   made   mukuro   unpredictable .

          not   that   it   would   take   long   to   fix   that ,      but ,      for   now ,      it   was   at   least   sort   of   entertaining .      a   departure   from   boring ,      predictable   everyday   life .      knew   people   did   things   like   this   when   reunited ,      but   hadn’t   at   all   expected   such   a   thing   from   MUKURO .      “      watch   out       —      i   don’t   wanna   get   dirt   all   over   my   clothes .      ”      though   spoken   with   a   playful   sort   of   giggle .      arms   would   wrap   back   around   the   other .      “      welcome   back .      you   ready   to   take   a   real   fucking   shower   again ?      ”

          SHE’S   A   COWARD ?      oh ,      perhaps   so ,      but   she’d   never   claimed   to   be   brave ,      so   why   should   it   matter ,      really ?      yet ,      the   insult   still   STUNG   all   the   same ,      coming   from   her   own   twin .      the   one   whose   approval   every   part   of   her   soul   screamed   for .      what   she’d   made   her   life’s   goal   to   destroy .      to   urge   mukuro   to   hate   her .      allow   them   both   to   sink   into   that   sweet   despair   it   would   bring .

          so   she’d   accept   the   pain   gratefully ,      smile   formed   on   her   lips   as   her   head   fell   to   the   side .      considered   the   words   carefully .      reveled   in   them .      heart   was   already   beating   hard   in   her   chest       —      arms   crossed   across   her   chest .      offered   her   own   biting   insult   in   response      —        after   all ,      the   despair   it   might   bring   was   incredible .      the   pain   of   speaking   them   already   incredible .      “      &&   you’re   not ?      hiding   in   the   shadows ,      killing   anyone   who   looks   at   you   the   wrong   way ?      just   because   you   know   how   to   fight ,      doesn’t   make   you   brave .      hell ,      you   can’t   even   admit   how   you   TRULY   FEEL .      i’d   say   that’s   just   as   cowardly   as   anything   i’ve   done .      ”

          A   GIGGLE   BUBBLED   UP      past   her   lips      —      breathless .      gasping .      hand   moved   to   the   blade   that   had   pierced   her   abdomen ,      clear   through   to   the   other   side .      those   words       —      those   two   words   that   hurt   even   worse   than   her   wound .      a   deep   sting   of   despair   as   it   welled   in   the   back   of   her   throat .      forced   out   in   a   near   maniacal   sort   of   laughter .      oh ,      of   all   the   ways   to   die .      of   all   the   things   to   KILL   HER ,      her   own   sister .      the   one   person   she   loved   in   this   universe   so   unconditionally .

          IT   WAS   PERFECT .

          really .      she   couldn’t   ask   for   a   better   way   to   die .      one   palm   found   the   floor       —      heel   of   it   planted   firmly   in   the   ground   as   she   braced   herself .      free   hand   found   the   hilt   of   the   blade ,      just   up   &&   to   the   left   of   her   belly   button .      just   below   her   ribs .      perhaps   could   be   fixed ,      if   the   blade   wasn’t   removed .      if   it   didn’t   move   too   much .      all   things   she   knew   perfectly   well   as   her   gaze   fixed   on   her   twin       —      a   grin   spread   across   her   cheeks   as   she   twisted   the   hilt       —      doubling   over   with   a   grimace   that   would   force   it’s   way   across   her   features .      found   herself   panting   as   pain   practically   blinded   her .      could   swear   she   was   going   to   vomit .

          but   she   didn’t .      looked   back   up   to   her   sister   as   she   drew   the   blade   out       —      action   accentuated   by   the   blood   that   so   readily   began   to   escape   her   wound .      a   smile   once   again   graced   her   lips .      blade   shoved   away   weakly   as   she’d   support   herself   now   with   both   arms .      mukuro   really   was   incredible ,      wasn’t   she ?      this   may   as   well   have   really   been   an   act   of   KINDNESS .      or   perhaps   some   bittersweet   irony .      either   way       —      the   despair   that   flooded   her   senses   now       —      the   sheer   hopelessness .      her   sister’s   hatred       —      the   pain       —      the   knowledge   that   she   had   FAILED .      god ,      it   was   so   incredibly   BEAUTIFUL .      

          almost   wanted   to   thank   mukuro ,      but   knew   it   would   mean   nothing .      no       —      nothing   so   simple .      no   final   profession   that   she   really   did   love   her .      mukuro   deserved   BETTER   than   that .      one   more   option .      one   more   plea   that   she   had   to   know   would   shatter   junko   if   it   weren’t   followed .      send   her   into   the   most   beautiful       —      DELICIOUS   DESPAIR   she   had   ever   felt .      “      please   don’t   go   yet .      ”
