The story behind this: There’s an elderly lady that hangs around our office (not sure why or who she is, but she does not look shabby or like a homeless person; unlike the crazy guy with afro hair and torn clothes that talks to himself whom we call #awannano). Some time ago, someone posted on facebook that he bought this lady a meal because she was actually homeless (i dunno how true this is but i find it hard to believe) and actually encouraged others to buy her meals if we ever saw her, which is totally fine! I actually had a bit of respect for the lady; for being able to keep herself clean and kempt DESPITE being homeless. But today, i saw her randomly asking strangers for money to buy SNACKS and i just #cannotbrain. I can understand if she became desperate and asked for money to buy a decent meal or at least something that would keep her from going hungry, but snacks? Honestly, it was not the snacks that caught my attention, but the entitled look she had on her face, and the annoyed but obligated look the man she approached had on his as he pulled out his wallet. And that got me thinking; how did our society become so self-entitled? Whose fault is it that these people think that it is their birth right to receive kindness from strangers? I love that we Malaysians are known for our generosity but have we created monsters by doing so? I’m all for helping people, but what do you do when you know you’re being taken for a ride?
