Mordred was brainwashed by Morgana. Mordred changed drastically he has his doubts (even if they were deleted scenes they are part of canon). Morgana makes him not doubt, Morgana makes it so he will kill Arthur.
Alex believes Morgana brainwashes Mordred, it is part of how he acted those final moments, he tried to make it come across in the smile. It is also how he tries to justify his very quick turn to absolute evil.
