Ryder has always felt trapped in his family’s shadow. His father, a doctor and his mother a successful lawyer from Miami. While he loves both of his parents, he always knew that he had to be just as successful as they were one day. The only trouble was his grades. For years and years Ryder would struggle with the most basic things, reading, writing and comprehension.
He braved his way through school but in his Sophomore year of high school, a teacher noticed his struggle and brought in a specialist. They learnt that Ryder was dyslexic and started to put support plans in place to help him progress. This helped him out a lot but he still felt trapped to a profession he knew he could never do. He could never see himself as a doctor or a lawyer. He was lost and didn’t know what to do with himself.
As senior year approached, he still had no career plans. He knew he loved playing football and he was good at it, but he hadn’t been recruited by any scouts. He enjoyed performing but he knew there was no way he could be on Broadway or a major film.
When he graduated, his parents started to pressure him to get a job and to make something of himself. Go to college. Get a career. He managed to get a job at a local coffee shop and worked there for a year.
But as the year went on, things only seemed to get worse. Ryder had hanging out with one of his colleagues of the coffee shop, Cheryl. The two got along really well and he thought about asking her out. He had a plan on how to do it but then, something went wrong.
They both went to a party and got very drunk, they talked, ended up kissing and he woke up in her bed. He didn’t remember how he got there, and he didn’t remember doing anything with her. When he woke up, she informed him that they had sex. He had passed out before even taking his pants off and she had just continued. He felt horrified and left immediately, not contacting her again.
Ryder gathered as much money together as he could, packed a bag and got on the first plane he could. It brought him to Seattle, Washington. He had no where to live and no job but he needed a new start.
That, was when he saw the advert for the Spotlight Diner. It even came with accommodation and allowed him to perform every now and then, it was almost too good to be true. Ryder filled out the application to his best ability and waited to hear back.
