So I have that ridiculous post about Steve and Tolkien that went a little viral that I wrote some Stony snippets for last year and, fuck it, I'm apparently writing a whole fic about this. So have a prologue, of sorts.

“I hope the room is acceptable, Captain Rogers.”

The room is empty, is what it is. There’s a single bed, made up with crisp sheets and blankets folded to military precision, a nightstand with a Bible inside, and a dresser that’s mostly empty because the clothes he was given can fit in a single drawer. The most exciting part of the room is the small stack of books sitting on top of the dresser, a carefully curated selection of reference books about the end of the War and the decade beyond. Old history to these folks, Steve supposes, but what would have been the recent future for him just a few days earlier.

Steve is used to sparse quarters, or no quarters at all, but there’s something particularly lonely about this SHIELD-issued room. Maybe it’s the fact that Steve knows he’s being isolated, with Agent Hill being only the fourth SHIELD official he’s seen since waking up. Or maybe it’s the too-fresh grief still pushing against his ribs, tearing at his throat, desperate to be let out- to be shared, even though there’s no one left to share it with.

“The room is fine,” Steve says, and he forces a smile even though it feels brittle on his face.

Agent Hill nods, just once. “Director Fury will stop by tomorrow morning to discuss the next steps with you. Is there anything you need in the meantime?”

“Is there- I had things, left behind, when I- when the plane went down,” Steve manages to get out. “Is there any chance…?”

Steve might be imagining it, but he thinks he sees something in Agent Hill’s face soften, just fractionally, at his question. “Your shield was recovered with you and is here with us, but most of what was on your person or in the plane was destroyed by the ice. Your dog tags survived, but not much else. As for everything else… After you were presumed dead, most of your belongings were divided between the Howling Commandos, sold to private collectors, or donated to museums. It’s likely not possible to recover it all. Was there something in particular you were looking for?”

Steve isn’t prepared for the lance of pain he feels at Agent Hill’s response. There’s something about the thought of his belongings gathering dust in museums and collections makes his chest feel painfully tight, like the heavy weight of an asthma attack even though that’s impossible with the serum. It’s a feeling that’s been sticking with him most of the day, ever since he woke up and realized that seventy years have passed by and left Captain America canonized and Steve Rogers all but forgotten.

Agent Hill’s comments about dog tags and his shield don’t help matters, either. SHIELD is a military organization, Steve knows that already, and it’s clear to him what value they see in his recovery. He wonders if that’s why she had said something, singular, as if the idea of Captain America placing value in any material possessions is ridiculous in every way.

Or maybe it would just be too difficult to wrestle back more than one item, no matter that it belonged to Steve first.

“Captain Rogers? Was there something specific you wanted back?” Agent Hill prompts after a too-long pause from Steve.

Yes, god yes, Steve wants to say, but the words stick in his throat with his grief.

What singular item can he ask be returned to him? How can he pick one belonging to recover when what he wants back is everything? Perhaps more importantly what can he ask SHIELD, this military organization, to find for him that won’t lessen their opinion of him and jeopardize his safety in this unknown future?

Steve clears his throat and says, “I’d like my dog tags and my shield returned to me, and…”

There was a book that he left behind, a slim fantasy volume given to him by his mother- a children’s book, really, but Steve loved it anyway, cherished it even more after his mother’s death. He wants that book back so badly it makes his chest ache, wonders if rereading it could help him make some sense of the outlandish adventure he’s found himself on… but he knows that’s not what he’s going to ask for.

“I had a sketchbook,” Steve says instead, because this is important too and this at least can he can spin a convincing story about. “It wasn’t much, just an old journal with some doodles, but it had sketches of my Ma and-” he swallows, and forces his voice to stay level, “-and Bucky in it. I’d like it back, if it’s still around.”

“I’ll have someone bring your dog tags up. Your shield is being inspected for damage from the ice, but I’ll talk to Director Fury about having it returned to you,” Agent Hill says. “As for the rest… I’ll see what I can do. I can’t make any promises, but I’ll look into it.”

Steve nods. It’s the sort of response he was expecting, because he knows they won’t give him his shield- a weapon, in his hands- immediately, and he has no doubt that Hill is placating him by agreeing to search for the sketchbook. The dog tags are a cold comfort when compared against everything he’s lost, but he’ll take them nonetheless. There are too many pieces of himself missing for him to turn anything down, no matter how small it may be.

“Thank you. I’d appreciate that,” Steve says, and for a moment he lets himself believe that he’s been fooled by her lie.

I just wanted to say, I read your LOTR headcanon for SR, and OMG. I loved it. It’s so freaking true. He could also pull similarities to Frodo and Bucky, cause of the ring weighing heavily while they’re in Mordor, as well as the wound Frodo gets at Weathertop.

I don’t think Bucky quite fits the Frodo narrative, but in terms of the Steve/Sam parallels he serves a similar function as Frodo does to Sam’s story. Namely that Steve and Sam are both “accidental heroes” in that they end up where they do because they were in the right place at the right time. Frodo, I think, takes more direct action towards shaping what happens with the Quest and the Ring than Bucky does with his own story (in so much as while they both volunteer for their respective “service” Bucky tends to have things happen to him whereas Frodo makes decisions and deals with the results of those decisions).

But both Steve and Sam become “heroes” because of their counterpart- Steve when he hears that Bucky is MIA and goes after him, and Sam when he thinks Frodo is dead and carries the Ring himself and subsequently also goes to save Frodo. Neither Steve nor Sam would consider themselves to be a hero (”I’m just a kid from Brooklyn.”) but even after Frodo sails and Bucky is “dead” they continue to do and be more than they were before (Sam as Mayor of Hobbiton and Steve by continuing to be an Avenger) and I think it’s fair to say that the changes they undergo are at the very least influenced by their relationships with Bucky and Frodo, even if those changes aren’t directly because of Bucky and Frodo.

Obviously this is all just my interpretation of the characters haha. Frodo, at least in my opinion, is a hard character to find a parallel to in other works because his hero’s journey is unique in very specific ways that aren’t usually found in other stories. But the effect that Frodo has on other characters, and how he influences their stories, is definitely similar to how Bucky influences Steve’s narrative.
