Most of you will remember that a little while ago, there was a significant leak from Capcom which included documents about an upcoming DGS and DGS2 English translated duology. This leak also contained script boxes and emails which show the “localised” names of some DGS characters- tweaked to look better to English speakers, make puns work in English, or avoid infringing on the Doyle estate’s strict copyright rules. This is a mostly-complete list of how the names are changing, as well as explanation of the puns. Names will be sorted by the case they debuted in, so it should be easy to avoid spoilers, but heads up that some puns may contain hints to certain characters’ fates and roles, etc.
This list won’t include characters who debuted in DGS2. A separate post for them is in the works- as always, remember these are leaks and not necessarily to be trusted.
The Adventure of the Great Departure

“Uzukumaru” comes from the word for “to crouch”, referring to his identity as a soldier; “Iyesa Nosa” is a pun on “yes sir, no sir”.

“Mitrov” is a pun on “meatloaf”, and beef stroganoff is a Russian dish. “Bif Strongenov” keeps the beef stroganoff pun, but adds “strong” into the mix.
Nikomina Borschevic -> Nikolina Pavlova
“Nikomina” is a Slavic-sounding name, and “Borschevic” is a pun on “borscht”, another Russian dish. “Nikolina” is an actual Slavic name, and “pavlova” is both a dessert and a reference to the Russian ballerina it was named for.
Dmitri Demiglaski -> Vilen Bolshevic
“Dmitri” is a Russian name, and “demi-glace” is a type of sauce. “Vilen” is a pun on “villain”, and “Bolshevic” is a pun on “Bolsheviks”, the political faction which ruled Soviet Russia.

“Hart” sounds like “heart”, and a “vortex” is... well, a vortex, a centre around which fluid revolves in a spiral. “Mael-strong” sounds like “maelstrom”, another word for a vortex/whirlpool, and his surname is a pun on “strong heart”.
Cosney Megundal -> Magnus McGilded
His Japanese name is a pun on “kozeni megundaru”, meaning “I’ll spare you some change”. “Magnus” is a Latin word meaning “big” or “great”, “gilded” refers to something covered in gold, and the “Mc” is because the localisation is going to make him Irish, supposedly.

“Crogley” sounds similar to “kuro-gure” meaning “black-grey”, and the pun is preserved with “ash gray”. Incidentally, Ashley was a man’s name in the UK at the time DGS is set.
Nemmy & Tully Tinpillar -> Nash & Ringo Skulkin
“Nemmy” sounds like “nemui”, meaning “tired”; “Tully” sounds like “tari”, meaning “happy”. “Tinpillar” comes from “chinpira” meaning “hoodlum”. “Skulkin” sounds both like “skull” (a motif in the brothers’ designs) and “skulking” (ie. keeping suspiciously out of sight), although I can’t find any obvious pun in “Nash” and “Ringo”.

Following on from my previous post (here), last month’s leaks also contained the localised names of the characters who debuted in Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2. Beware of potential spoilers, especially since the existence of certain characters in this game is a spoiler in itself. This list will not include characters who already made their debut in DGS1.
Haori Murasame -> Rei Membami
A “haori” is an article of Japanese clothing, and “Murasame” comes from the Japanese for a “passing shower”. “Rei Membami” is a pun on “remember me”, referring to her admiration and affection for Susato.
Heita Mamemomi -> Raiten Menimemo
“Mamemomi”, as well as being satisfying to say, comes from “memoru”, “to write a memo”. “Raiten Menimemo” is a play on “writing many memo(s).”

“Decargo” derives from “dekai ago” meaning “big chin”, describing his appearance. The “Mieterman” pun originally meant “saw it all” (”mitta man”) but has been adapted into “meter man”, since he works with gas meters. “Adron B.” sounds like “a drone bee”, referring to his design/connection to Mrs Altamont.

“Rumba” is a phonetic rearrangement of the Japanese “barun” (balloon), and the “maru” in “Marmatch” means “round”. “Balthazar Lune” keeps the balloon pun (“Bal... Lune”). “Lune” means “moon”, which also gives a “round” impression.
Connette Rozaic -> Esmerelda Tusspells
“Connette” comes from “koneru”, “to knead” (a word related to clay-working); “Rozaic” comes from “rozaiku” meaning “waxworks”. The localisation seems to have gone for witchy puns instead, with “Tusspells” being a combination of “Tussauds” (a famous real-life British waxwork museum) and “spells”.

“Mittlemont” sounds like “miteiru mono”, a person who watches. This is preserved in “Vigil”. Additionally, “Evie” sounds like “eve” or “evening”, making her name similar to “evening vigil”.

His full Japanese name roughly sounds like “a person who watches every day”; a “daily vigil” is more or less the same thing.
Maurice de Quilco -> Fabien de Rousseau
“de Quilco” comes from “dekiru ko”, “capable child”. “Maurice” is a French name. “Fabien” is also a French name, and “Rousseau” sounds like “rouge” meaning “red” in French, a reference to his hair.
Marco di Gicho -> Peppino di Rossi
Similarly to de Quilco, “di Gicho” comes from “dojikko”, meaning “clumsy child”. “Marco” is an Italian name. “Peppino” is also an Italian name, and “Rossi” comes from “rosso”, Italian for “red”, again referring to his hair.

Both seasons of the Ace Attorney anime have been released on Netflix in Japan! This is following leaks last November which suggested that we would be getting the anime streaming on both Japanese and overseas services.
I presume we’ll get the anime over here eventually, but this is a good sign that those leaks had some truth to them!
Unfortunately, the only thing I know about AA7 is that it was intended for a Q3 2021 (october-december) release, and is now delayed due to COVID. Most of the leak concerned the DGS duology, so in terms of script, characters or even staff for AA7 I’m totally in the dark.
The DGS port was intended to promote AA7, generating hype and interest in the series, so we can assume AA7 is still happening since work on the duology hasn’t halted. Release dates post-covid are up in the air, but I wouldn’t expect to hear anything about AA7 until autumn of this year or later. Maybe TGS 2021 will have some news!
Honestly though, if there are any leaks regarding the plot or any details that aren’t purely technical, I probably won’t post them here or even look at them. DGS is one thing, but I’d really love to go into aa7 blind!
