The Sanderling is one of the world’s most widespread shorebirds despite the fact that it only nests in the High Arctic. It can range as far as southern South America, eventually returning to breed in northern Canada! Sanderlings are usually monogamous, but occasionally females will breed with multiple males in a row. Both sexes will incubate the eggs. Non-breeders routinely avoid the energy expensive migration northward altogether; instead remaining on their wintering grounds or other warmer sandy beaches. Species Status: Least Concern
