If you look really closely you will see the back of an American bittern hiding in the reeds. This bad photo was taken after I got a much better look with my binoculars. Tide was dead low so it was resting most likely. It took a long time to find it but I was super glad I persevered! The vermillion flycatcher in Brewster was still putting on a show when I went to see and photograph him this morning. This jaunty little guy was busy doing his flycatcher thing but is way out of his normal range. A first year male, he wandered a bit too far. Beautiful day for spying the very rare vermilion flycatcher that has been visiting Paine’s Creek area in Brewster. My camera wasn’t up to the challenge but I did get some nice looks at it. This watercolor is more than 30 years old and in such bad shape I am tossing it. I photographed it as a record and sharing it here. In the early 80s I had the privilege of accompanying my friend @capecodkaki who was studying colonial waterbirds for her doctoral thesis. We visited several colonies of black crowned night herons and snowy egrets over several years. Third family of mockingbirds in my yard has been hanging out this week and this is one of the babies that was making a racket. It had very little tail and was constantly begging for food as its parents flew about gathering food for it and its sibling.
