Four 18th century Cape Cod houses (1760-1790 I’d say). The first one pictured is a bow roofed example from Sandwich (a half Cape with only one front window, it could be called a quarter Cape). Next is a classic half Cape in Dennis. Then a three quarter Cape in Provincetown that has had its center chimney altered in the 19th century. And last a full Cape in Bass River that also has had chimney work. Maintaining old shrubs has been a challenge but check out this white azalea and bridal veil. They got pruned and cleaned up last summer and what a show they are putting on this year. Like the lilacs—which you can see fading in the background—they came with the house. At that time they were completely buried beneath massive rhodies that were so big and unweildy they covered the entire front of the house halfway up the roof. When we bought our house 35 years ago it had hand made wooden shutters painted blue. They weren’t in great shape but we left them until we couldn’t stand it anymore because, well, we are those people. We wish there were elves that came in the middle of the night to do some of these daunting tasks. One upside to ya being home is we’ve tacked some big tasks. The shutters have been stacked in the basement for years, awaiting our attention. It has taken weeks of constant repair, sanding and painting but my husband completed the task today.
