10 Question Interview With Remixer/Producer Caperraticus
18-October-2018 By Gary Blake
US (Riverside, CA) based producer Caperraticus takes us through his influences and his approach to remixing and producing songs. His EDM remix of ‘Underdog’ comes out digitally on 23-Oct-2018.
1. How did you get into music and who are your influences?
I got into music in high school actually! I wrote music for my high school marching band and concert band in Finale and Sibelius. I was obsessed with polyrhythms and hemiola-like effects. After high school I purchased FL Studio 11 and began messing around in it and watching tons of tutorials. My influences include artists like Redondo, LANY, Sia, and R3HAB.
2. What are your musical aspirations?
I just want to keep making music. I love doing remixes and ghost production. I think my aspirations would be to become a well know producer like Max Martin.
3. Tell us about your hardware - including real instruments you play
I produce most of my music on my HP laptop and through Presonus Eris studio monitors or my Audio Technical ATH-M50X
4. Tell us about your software - DAW, synth patches, sample packs
I produce on FL Studio 20 (12 when I made this remix) and I use Sylenth1, Massive, Omnisphere, iZotope Ozone 8, Melodyne, and a couple stock FL plugins.
5. How do you get yourself heard in a massively overcrowded music industry?
Connect to people, send messages, invest time in hearing other people’s music, give feedback, and the reciprocation will come with time. The more music you make the more people will want to follow. There are going to be hundreds of producers that start at at the same time as you, so connect with them and grow together. I use Instagram for marketing and Spotify is my main focus.
6. Do you have a particular style or genre you are drawn to - or are you more of a free spirit?
I’m drawn to future pop/synth wave genres. I tend to produce a little more heavily nearing future house, future bounce, or future bass, but future pop is what I’m drawn to.
7. If you could remix or produce any artist or band who would it be?
I would definitely remix Sia. I love working with vocals and I try to take different parts of a vocal, like something from a verse or bridge, and turn that into the hook for the remix. Her vocals would be amazing to work with since she puts so much character into each line.
8. Your best Top Tip to any remixer just starting out
Don’t be scared to make the remix completely different. Unless the artist or manager you’re working with has explicitly stated ground rules for the request, don’t be afraid to completely change it. They’re usually wanting something fresh and new. Not just the same song with pitched up vocals and a different tempo.
9. Do you play live? If so tell us more…
I do not play live. I played live for about 6 months and it just wasn’t for me.
10. What is it about the song ‘Underdog’ that inspired you do create such an amazing new version of it?
The vocals immediately caught my ear. The vocalist’s pronunciation of words and variating inflections was incredibly interesting.
