So, my 2019 New Years resolution might actually be to exercise less. Of my route in the past 2 years, I've cycled I'd say 98% of which, bar the odd bus, or police escort, or hitchhike due to safety, road condition, irreparable bike breakdown or misc. It should go without saying that I find cycletouring a highly rewarding means of travel and do it under my own volition. Yet, I'll openly admit that sometimes there are stretches that I don't enjoy or gain as much as other parts. Taking transport involves trust and sucking up my pride/stubbornness. But, having already cycled the circumference of the globe on bike trips, I've since lost the need to prove anything to myself or anyone else. This next year up to Europe and across the Silk Road, I may (and may need to) selectively take more transport. Overall, I choose to ride, I wont force myself to... And I bike to travel, I don't travel to bike. So, looking forward the another exciting year of biking adventures, but all the while opting to keep a more open mind about the decisions to be made on the road ahead. Cycling isn't about the gear. Amir here is a testament to the spirit of bike travel sans professional equipment. He was backpacking and expressed interest... Two trips to the market, 24 hours, food bucket panniers, and some $100 of China bike and China parts later he was ready to go. The Flying Pidgeon performed adequately for 3 days. We rode up the Nile and had the opportunity to visit several less visited temples. Amir was fairly well versed in Egyptian mythology and proved a sufficient guide as any. The first night we were able to camp and swim by the Nile, but the following day, and for the remainder of the trip we attracted police escorts. This made Amir change his decision to bike Egypt, and eventually mine as well... Here's to Africa! From Capetown to Cairo. Exactly 8 months and around 14,000km prior, I was clueless as to how this journey would unfold and looking at an unfamiliar map, was unsure of what each country would present. All I can say is it's been a whirlwind of extreme experiences and each country left me with incredibly distinct and emotional memories that will stick with me for my lifetime. There were the punk rock shows in Capetown. I lost my mind in the Namibian desert. I rode alongside giraffes and elephants in Botswana. Got soaked by Victoria falls in Zimbabwe. Encountered some of the friendliest people in Zambia. Partied my face off on lake Malawi. Got spoiled to a luxury hotel on the island of Zanzibar. Bribed our way out of arrest exploring lava caves in Rwanda. Rafted some class 5 rapids at the source of the Nile in Uganda. Met indigenous tribesman in Kenya. Had fist sized rocks hurled at me in Ethiopia. Experienced endless hospitality by the people of Sudan. And in Egypt gained some 24/7 police popularity and explored the pyramids escorted with armed security detail. To name a few... A bit reflective and pensive as I cross out of Egypt tonight...
