“One time my muse said they didn’t care about yours…”i. Noah is leaning against his doorframe in some mockery of a seductive slouch, arm tossed up above his head and sly smile dancing across his mouth. “C’mon, you haven’t done anything in weeks,” he drawls, advancing on where Ceydran is collapsed on the couch. He places one hand on the armrest near his head and leans down, letting his words come out like honey wine.“Don’t tell me you’ve finally run out of steam, old man,” he says with a toothy grin, and suddenly Ceydran can smell the liquor on his breath and he groans a soft noise of realization. Maybe when he first joined the Menagerie, when he and Noah could spend hours together before getting into a fight, before something between them or inside them soured and now they can’t be in a room together alone without scales showing. He sighs and pushes Noah off him, but keeps his hand wrapped in his shirt. Noah, for once, is silent. “Not now,” Ceydran murmurs, and sits up. He motions for Noah to join him. As he flicks through channels to find something easy, some rom com or crime show, he watches Noah settle uneasily down out of the corner of his eye. He knows how hard it is for Noah to drop his act, but he can’t be the second player today. He exhales in relief when Noah lets his head loll back and his arm drop around Ceydran’s neck. He can’t help but lean into it, exhausted as he is.Noah looks down, and asks, suddenly plaintive: “Don’t you want me?” Ceydran scoffs. “No,” he lies. He’s such a hypocrite with how he complains about Noah’s acts and games when it feels more like a show of mirrors most days. “I want you to shut up and watch Criminal Minds with me and stop trying to pretend you’re something you aren’t.” Noah laughs, low, and Ceydran can feel it where his face rests against his shoulder. “I’d almost think you cared about me, the way you talk sometimes,” he teases in response, but beneath the taunt is something almost pleading. Ceydran swallows the waves in his throat back down, and returns the laugh, though it’s a little too stiff. “You wish,” he says, settling into the cushions. Funny how liars beget more lies.
“…And one time they admit it.”ii. He sees the mass of feathers on the rocks poking through the surf and suddenly he’s rocketed back to the pebbled shore in New York where he dragged his brother’s limp body out of the ocean and he’s running, scrambling down the cliff side, loosing rocks behind him as he falls more than climbs down the path. He turns as he crashes into the waves, lengthening body reaching Noah before his heart does. Isn’t that how it always was? He picks him up gently in his mouth, lifting him out of the water, and he knows all too well what blood looks like reflected in sea foam. He wills himself to stay calm, carrying Noah back to shore where he deposits him carefully on the ground, collapsing back to himself just in time to see Noah blink awake.“Oh, thank god,” he chokes, and grabs at his face, helping him sit up as he coughs up sea water and blood. “Oh, thank god,” he repeats, air and adrenaline sighing out of him with the words and suddenly he’s so afraid he’s almost angry. He holds Noah closer when he starts to shiver, and demands in a voice more wracked with concern than anger: “Why did you do that? You could’ve killed yourself, you can’t do that, you can’t do that to me–“ He cuts himself off with a shuddering breath when Noah’s hand touches his and he looks up at him. “What does it matter to you?” Noah asks defiantly, almost disappointed. Ceydran’s been dragged out of the ocean before, he knows that voice. He hates it. “Because I fucking care about you,” he snaps back, and the words come out fast and bitter, like he’s spitting them out. Noah doesn’t reply, just closes his eyes and lies back limp into the sand. Ceydran bows his head over him, the feeling of Noah’s breath lifting his chest up and down releasing the fear into something more bone deep, something like the cold of the deep sea that sets his chest freezing and tight. A few tears leak out of his eyes, and he squeezes them shut, fisting his hands into the wings spread out before him like a fallen Icarus.
