I've had a ghost message in my inbox pretty much as long as I've had my tumblr account. It displays the number 1, but there's never a message there! I think their messaging system is probably just wonky on the whole.
i think you are absolutely right - it's just i had a few people tell me they sent me anons and try again to send and the anon wouldn't go through but the regular or fan mail would - grrrr TUMBLR FIX YOUR MESS OF A MESSAGING SYSTEM!
