Final Reflection Video!!!
I am hoping to become an art professor, teacher, or animator for organizations that do research and scientific data on adults and children on the autism spectrum. So for the upcoming capstone, which is next semester, I have to prepare for it early this semester. I am starting out with an abstract paper on what I want to do, how to go by this, and if there are any speculations. -------------------------------- So, if you are interested in reading this, I only had to do one page. Seventh Update (4/28/2026)
The last day of class was today. It felt very daunting that this was my last class before commencement next saturday. Regardless, I can proudly say that my game is finally ready to be uploaded and awaiting final polishing.
Since the last time I've published an update, I made a breakthrough with the game over screen as it was giving me some difficulty. Before, despite being completed, the button was not allowing me to interact with it and not listening to the command. However, I finally managed to figure it out and now the game over screen is up and running! Now it's the tutorial for the levels of the game. Initially, I wanted to implement a tutorial UI for the player to understand the controls of the game. I have to add some edits to the graphic but it shouldn't be too difficult because I still have the original files on my school canva account. As the last week draws near, I plan to upload my game to itch.io since I heard it was the easiest to upload (if embedded with HTML). Before publishing the finalized game, I plan to do one last test play and then see how it looks like displayed on itch.io interface. If there are any adjustment's needed to be made, I'll reconfigure on the initial file. I don't have much to show but I hope I can share the link to my game soon! A lot of things are coming up this up coming week and I'm both nervous but excited at the same time. Good luck to everyone and I hope to see you all in the near future! Bye!
Sixth Update (4/13/2026)
In the last stretch of our spring semester, time is moving at a rapid pace that seems impossible to catch up with. Even so, there were so many accomplishments made within the time frame of the last update to now. As of yesterday, I can proudly say that the game is further close to completion! From the moment you enter the game to the last stretch in act 3, Naupaka Reunion is in its final stages and very little polishing is needed to make it complete.
Now the hiccups, despite it being near completion, there are a few add ons that need to make it feel like a game worth playing. For instance, the UI for the tutorials need to be implemented before the start of each level. Although the graphics is finished for them, it's a matter of adding the buttons and scripts to ensure the codes adhear to the command. Same goes for the game over screen. The UI shows it works but the commands are not adhering to the command of showing when it needs to. All very minuscule tasks but it makes the overall playthrough feel more polished and finalized before submitting its final product. I also wanted to implement camera shake command to make the cutscenes feel more immersive but other than that, that's pretty much the tasks needed to complete Naupaka Reunion.
In the projected weeks to come, I hope to be able to submit my game to Sharla and present my semester long work to anyone who decides to play it. I'm so excited to showcase my game and can't wait to share with you all on why sharing Kanaka ʻŌiwi stories is important through this project. Until then, I wish everyone good luck on the capstone projects. Almost there!
Fifth Update (3/31/2026)
From this point on, our class has entered the post-production: the phase where everything comes together. From the very beginning of this semester, I thought the task of creating my own video game was so daunting and intimidating to me. It isn't because of creating my own story for the game, this came natural to me, it was the thought of coding the game that intimidated me, because of the endless probabilities of something being wrong from one simple line of code.
Since the last update, I can confidently say that I'm approaching the final stages of completing my capstone project. Each segment (Level, cutscenes, etc) is interwoven with one another and is playable for anyone to try. As of now, there's the matter of transitioning from level to cutscenes that is not functioning properly. Again, something minor but can be fixed before anything else. I also began working on a google form for the game as its meant to act as feedback form to improve on the base game.
Until the next update, I hope to fix the minor setbacks so that way the game can be playable to the full extent. Afterwards, I hope to polish the game (audio, functions, etc) and add the link to the google form at the end of the game. As I approach the last stretch of the semester, I can't wait to share what I have created these past few months with you all as well as look forward to everyone else's projects too! Until the next update, good luck to everyone! We're almost there!
Fourth Update (3/10/2026)
As of yesterday, it's the mark of week 9! From the last time, I feel like a lot has happened when, in actuality, not that many obstacles were encountered. To start off, I met Kumu Kari, the lab director of Create(x) lab at West Oahu, through a mutual. After explaining my capstone project and shared interest in game coding, she extended her assistance to me for any feedback on the coding aspect of things. So for that, I'm somewhat reassured to have that aid.
Furthermore, I've begun the completion of all major cutscenes along with the main menu. After some trials and errors, the finalized menu is up and running and it has a seamless transition into the first cutscenes. From what I can remember, there weren't any major obstacles that I've encountered, while trying to create the cutscenes and/or the menu. The only hurdle I've really encountered was the procrastination to get the menu done and move on to the next work in progress segment.
For the next two weeks, I'm hoping to finally start working on the gameplay aspect of the game. So far, I've started with creating the main character and getting the collision down so the player can freely move. In spite of that, it's still a long way to go, in terms of adding codes and putting everything together. I still have to think of other aspects to add to the final game (I.E music, sound effects, camera work). But first things first: gameplay!
Until the next update, have some screenshots I took of my capstone pitch from todays class meeting! See you in the next two weeks! Last stretch of the production phase!
