I also agree 100% on your post regarding the cover up issues. It's not only social networking, that makes it difficult, we also have cameras in our phones to take 'proof' 24/7 and the possibilty to make HD videos. And of course there are programs like photoshop. I think we would've missed out on great moments between these two (like gentle touches or Louis' blinking in the 'lovebite' video), if we wouldn't have the possibility to turn everything into a gif, slow it down, etc..
That's a really good point! They have to be on their game all the time, and it must feel like they're totally out of control, because so much depends upon Harry and Louis and how they act in public, and mgmt's official "story" isn't enough if H&L contradict it in their actions. Whereas before, celebrities could pretty much act however they wanted and be okay, because in the end their management could control what information was exposed to the public.
I was actually discussing this the other day, how idk, trigger-happy? 1D's management seems, and how a large part of that has to do with how out of control they must feel in this day and age. Because like this post suggests, they should be able to bribe official media sources and ultimately control what gets published, but they don't always have that option with individual fans with cameras and smart phones. So if any fan gets ANY kind of incriminating evidence, they have no way of knowing and stopping its release until after the fact. And that must drive them crazy with worry. Management of bands in the past never had to deal with the unpredictable nature of social media and technology, and that's just one more reason for 1D's management to go overboard with coverups and preemptive damage control. It seems so elaborate because it needs to be so elaborate. Yeah, they're stupid and careless sometimes, but that's probably just a result of them being (understandably) nervous and panicky.
