A parcel had arrived on the steps of the vampire’s home. She lifted it from the stoop and carried it inside, wondering who sent it and what it could possibly be. She sat it down on her kitchen table and unwrapped the box, pulling the lid off.
The blind woman inhaled the scent of it, trying to discern if it was anything hazardous. Unable to sense any threat, she lowered her hand into the box. Inside was a small staff. It was gold, about a foot long, and very detailed. She held it in her hands, fingers sliding over the surface of it. The Mistress felt a small button on either side of the staff.
Using both hands, she pressed each side individually. Nothing happened. She frowned and tried again, this time pressing them at the same time. Instantly, the staff began to hum. It grew warm in her hands and the next second, the staff erupted.
She felt herself being ripped from her spot and thrown across the hall into her sitting room. The vampire landed on shoulders, slamming her head into the floor and passing out. Standing in the kitchen was an exact double of the woman who was thrown across the room. One eye was grey, the other was pitch black. With a growl, the other woman rushed from the house, leaving the door open behind her.
The staff that had caused this was now split in two, one half on the floor in the kitchen, the other half in the hands of the double.
