What Is Methane and Why Does It Matter? - Rocky Mountain Institute

Methane is a superpotent greenhouse gas, and its power to adversely affect the global climate is well known. Managing methane that escapes the natural gas supply chain is critical to combating climate change and is becoming increasingly important to oil and gas companies as customers begin to demand climate-responsible gas.

The oil and gas industries are responsible for about 22% of human-generated methane emissions, mostly through leaks at various points between the well and the consumer. The good news is that technical solutions already exist.

What is To Carbon Zero about, anyway?

This is the beginning of an outline for a talk I’m working on, but it’s also a pretty good overview of the topics under the To Carbon Zero umbrella. 

Where does the carbon come from? 

Carbon conservation: use less energy in the first place.

Green energy: use sources that are more carbon friendly.

Sequestration: natural and technological ways to pull carbon out of the air.

Mitigation: dealing with the effects of climate change.
