Christchurch Transitional Cathedral. Also referred to as the Cardboard Cathedral, for the use of cardboard tubing on the steel structure. Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, the 2014 Pritzker Prize winner, is celebrated for his humanitarian and disaster relief structures, constructed out of recycled or recyclable materials. After the 22 February 2011 Christchurch earthquake, the Cardboard Cathedral designed by Shigeru rose from the site by Latimer Square to become a Transitional Cathedral and the new symbol of the diocese and province of Canterbury. I greatly admire and love the Cardboard Cathedral. Sadly, the entrance to the Cathedral is now a melange of notices of coming events, stuck on the glass with blu tack, and the Church Shop has turned into a craft shop, selling “trinkets”. Great to be back in Christchurch! Here for an event tomorrow with @goodmagazinenz and just love the stained glass windows of the ‘Cardboard Cathedral’ officially the Transitional Cathedral designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban after the Christchurch earthquake of 2011. He designed a similar church after the Kobe earthquake.
