Thinking Outside of the Box
Starting in late 2012, Via Spiga's new shoe box began rolling out to stores and capturing the attention of fans everywhere. The redesign coincided with the launch of new Creative Director Edmundo Castillo's collection for the brand. Via Spiga's packaging received a radical transformation by New York-based artist Carlos Mare.
Featuring original artwork exclusive to the Via Spiga brand, the designer created organic lines in a glossy terra cotta orange set against a neutral background. This particular shade mirrors the new orange color that now appears in the lining of all Via Spiga shoes.
Carlos Mare is a New York City-based sculptor/painter who in 1985 pioneered a novel version of urban graffiti as modern sculpture. Widely recognized as a cultural asset of the early graffiti and post-graffiti art movements, his innovation broke from tradition and charted a new discourse about the role and aesthetic of the art form as sculpture in public space.
Carlos Mare is currently a Scholar in Residence at NYU's Metropolitan Center for Urban Education. His works have been exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris, Whitney Museum at Philip Morris, Bright University of Art-England, MoCA and El Museo del Barrio in New York.
