I decided to watch “Dalgliesh” to cope with the loss of Baelor Targaryen, and I didn't think there would be anything as sad as his death scene. However, this scene here comes close; I was really invested in this ship, and now I'm devastated about Adam and Kate not ending up together.
I really didn't care about that white woman, Emma. The chemistry wasn't there, and it can't compare to what Adam and Kate had. I mean, the yearning was so strong between them, and their chemistry was off the charts. Also, the age gap was perfect; everything about their relationship was so buzzy. I genuinely don't care about what happens in those books; in my heart, Adam is happily married to Kate.
It's perfectly possible to watch the whole second series in a few hours, no matter how important projects await you 😂
Once again, the crime plots are really nice, just like in Series One, and there are some blood and other potentially disturbing elements in the show.
No DS Masterson, the prick, in this series, what a relief! And actually, 1970s have become much better for me in the series without him in the plot (far from being great though).
OK, now time the most important emotionally engaging stuff for me (and not me only, obviously 😛): Adam, Kate, and their relationship.
It was so good to see Adam and Kate cooperate as a good team, and Adam being great as a mentor and boss.
Oh, Adam, in some ways you look more impacted by life in a negative way than in Series One...
"But where is his heart?", said about one of the characters is such an Adam thing to say. The thoughtful poet speaking. But he can become firm, when it's needed!
It totally makes sense for Kate to become attracted to Adam. Look, he's a competent, respectful and thoughtful man, it feels he's pretty progressive for his times, and mature. And sad/troubled, it possibly matters too. Kate, who has experienced prejudice, and also seems to value professionalism, justice and growth, fits the crush scenario really well.
OK, in my opinion Adam is very integrated as a man, but also somehow repressed (?). Two sides of the same coin, in a way.
It was so bitchy for one of the characters to mention Kate's feelings for Adam in such a rude manner. Obviously, the charater is actually a heartless b*tch all the time...
Actually, it's interesting that Kate's feelings are more noticeable after the bitchy character mentions them. Sure, feelings do develop, but it seems the person has made Kate more aware of some of her reactions (Kate seems to be more wary of them then, trying to hide some things).
Oh, Kate, you being hurt and jealous, when a new DS appears in the team... and giving it away so easily...
When Kate shoots a man, and is in shock, and Adam arrives to calm her down... He's beautifully protective, but also, she's the one to fall into his arms... and at some point, he says "You're OK, Seargant" and like, poor Kate, he knows what he's doing to make things formal 😭
Yes, it's a pretty understandable dynamics for them, with a mix of attraction, mentorship, hierarchy, working as a team in police and some partnership, and it's 1970s, but... Like, she's so clearly attracted to him, and afraid of losing him, and it's heartbreaking... Adam is not wrong in saying that she needs to grow professionally and be happy, but... would it really be impossible for it to happen, if they stay close?
Definitely, it's a psychologically complex situation, with Kate's feelings present, and Adam being impacted by them, and his past and mental state, and the way he feels about her, and all the ambiguity. It could hurt her. It could hurt them both, of course, and it would be horrible for both, Adam (given his past experiences) and Kate (who, while being strong, is somehow vunerable here).
It's awful they are in this age-gap-and-difficult-past-and-police-duty trope. It's difficult for me, because like, it's a believable and well-executed plotline, but also frustrating and why not give some romantic relationship a chance??
Not me thinking about moving, even heartbreaking fanfiction ideas.
