21 synonyms, most of them also in Carmichaelia. In te reo Māori, mākaka, maukoro, tainoka, taunoka, taranagahape, and neinei. There is a local saying E rito koe ki te taunoka, meaning 'taunoka has no heart', applied to an unreliable vacillating person.
A leafless nitrogen-fixing shrub found widely on both islands, which survives strong wind and drought without difficulty, but intolerant of salt spray and waterlogged soil. Hostplant to a wide range of mites and insects.
