Teaching carmy how to make soul food
summary: while preparing to spend your first thanksgiving together, you teach Carmy how to make soul food
warnings: none!
a/n: happy thanksgiving y’all! After enjoying an extremely LOW vibrational plate… I was inspired to write this :) I know that carmy is an established chef and all that but that’s why this is fiction 🤷🏾♀️ sorry this is so late, I literally was about to post and then I stupidly closed the tab without saving 🤦🏾♀️
When Carmy asked you to accompany him to Sugar’s for thanksgiving you were shocked. Knowing how important family and food is to Carmy, you were determined to impress him. You decided that you would make all of the staples of your thanksgivings back home.
You woke up early Thanksgiving morning to get started on your daunting task. Strong smells of seasoning and overall deliciousness filled your shared apartment.
“What are you making?” Carmy emerged into the kitchen with heavy eyes and messy hair. For once, the Beef was closed and he got to enjoy sleeping in.
“Mac and cheese, ham and stuffing,” you answer with a smile, stepping aside to make room for Carmy next to you, “I’m cutting the collared greens right now. I made the pie and cobbler last night when you were at work.”
“Wow you’ve got everything covered,” he stood next to you, wrapping and arm around your waist, “I’d lend a hand but I don’t think I’d be much help.”
“You? Thee Carmen Berzatto wouldn’t be much help?”
“Haha very funny, but I never really learned to make food like this. I’d love to learn,” he looked at the cutting board in front of him with a longing in his eyes. one thing about Carmen was that he would always find a way to make himself useful in a kitchen.
“Yeah? If you want, you could be my sous for the day,” you grinned at your corny reference to his profession.
“You know what that means?”
“No,” you smiled even harder.
Carmen was able to put his skills to use cutting collared greens with his trained precision. He watched intently as you floated around the kitchen, adding ingredients half hazardously and following the recipient from you mind.
“So you don’t need this huh?” He quipped, motioning to the readily available measuring cup.
“No not really, I don’t know why I even took it out.”
Once he finished chopping, he joined you at your side. He watched all of your techniques and helped where he could. The two of you were able to finish everything in record time.
As you packaged the last of the food, Carmy poured some deserved wine for the both of you.
“So how did I do? Was I a good teacher?” You turned to him.
“The best teacher I could ever ask for, thank you,” he grabbed your hips and planted a kiss on your forehead.
“Thank you, I’ve never cooked like this on my own. Thank you for all your help,” after moving to Chicago from your home town, you never imagined how you’d be spending holidays like this. You always pictured you’d be sad and alone- you were grateful to know that wasn’t true.
“Y’know,” he held your face and brought you closer to his, “we could just stay here and enjoy this meal together.”
“We can’t do that!”
“Says who?”
