I would destroy myself to fix you: If there’s one thing that has always been part of Serena if how true to herself she tries to be, even when she loses her way. There is a kindness in Serena that, despite all the obstacles that were thrown at her, never went away. It’s the base of her character, that strong desire to give what she can, to share as much as she can and to be there for those she loves, no matter what. That just might be her greatest quality but also her downfall, as there’s almost something naive about it and the way she spread that kindness. But that does not mean she is not conniving and has not, or would not, plot to bring someone down, even more if it meant protecting someone from her inner circle.

Party girls don’t get hurt: It’s well known how much of a party girl Serena has been as well as the many drugs relapse she had. The woman feels things too much, whether good or bad. This is characteristic of the environment she grew up in, where emotions, faults and problems were always shoved under the rugs. There has never been much room for all these things in the Van Der Woodsen household. Perfection was expected and anything that could be seen as something that would tarnish the name was buried so deep, it was not even something they could talk about. That created some inability for Serena to deal with her own emotions, almost feeling a constant shame of them which eventually lead her to party and drugs. An escape, a way to numb the pain, she would lose herself so far into the parties that coming back was hard. It has been a pattern with her, the dangerous slipping into old habits and demons when something became too much. To this day, there are still moments when the world gets too much and the temptation comes back.

A curious girl, a wanderer: Serena is a hopeless romantic. She falls for people easily and fast, putting her heart on her sleeve. She loves the idea of being swept up her feet but also, to have someone by her side, to confide in and share her thoughts and secrets. That need for love, for the male gaze to be on her with adoration, comes from the issues she has with her father. As much as she falls fast, her heat can be flighty at times, as she’s always looking for this ideal that cannot be achieved. Her romantic streak is also what makes her a bit of a bohemian, at least compared to so many of those from her world. This need to be alive, to feel alive every waking seconds, to taste the world and savour it. Her free spirit is what allows her to adapt easily to situations, giving the impression that everything is effortless for her.

She doesn’t need a hero, she is the hero: Serena can be fiercely independent, to a fault. She is no damsel in distress and that has lead her into a lot of trouble as she does not know how to ask for help. Standing on her own as always been something important to her. Whether she wants it or not, she is more like her mother than she wished. Strong willed, knowing what she wants and wanting to hold her head high no matter the obstacles.

Clever as the devil and twice as pretty: Serena’s beauty and grace as always been admired and pointed out, modeling at times and being featured in many gossip columns as someone with an amazing sense of style. That has also been a curse for her as she often had to prove that she is also intelligent and not just a pretty face. The stereotype of the ditzy blonde has been following her all her life and she had to fight even herself to remind everyone, herself included, that her potential does not lie only in her appearances. Serena is an intelligent woman with resources underestimated by those who do not know her well. She often lowered her intelligence in the past, fitting into the narrative others had of her, finding it easy to do that at times. But she is cunning and creative in her nature, easily able to seize others when needed.

* She would never admit it, but there is a very clear reason behind Lily’s madness for flitting from man to man. It’s quite simple, even. Ever since she left Rufus and returned home, she’s been trying to find some way to recreate how she felt when she was with him. She felt brave, and independent, and wanted, just for who she was - not because of her parents, her looks or her status. The more men she dated, the more desperate she became to find that feeling, find the warmth, the passion and the love that she had shared with Rufus all those years ago.

* In recent years, Lily has taken up photography again after she found one of her old cameras going through some stuff she’d kept in a storage room in the penthouse. She likes looking for moments of clarity, of pure emotions (preferably pure happiness) so that it can be preserved for a lifetime. In her own life, Lily is very good at leveling her emotions, only showing what she truly feels like with a handful of people and on a handful of occasions, and so it’s fascinating for her to see these intense moments captured on camera with other people.

* A (fair) few of the men that Lily has dated or married had been married to someone else when they met (Rufus at some point even said “he’s married, that is your type”). The reason that she often fell for married men, however, was because she would see these couples out and about and want what they were having. And so, she projected herself into that relationship, fell for the man because she thought that woman could be her, which of course only led to disappointment when it turned out differently than she had fantasized.

* There is only one person who she has ever allowed to call her by a nickname, and that’s Rufus. Everytime he calls her Lil, she is transported back to those times where she felt that she was living her own life, and even though it shocked her to her core the first time she heard it when they reacquainted after twenty years, it still makes her feel as loved as it did all those years ago.

* Lily has always tried not to be like her mother, but without any proper role models it’s clear that she has become the woman that her mother wanted her to be (save for all  the divorces). This is something that she hates about herself, and in crucial moments she does tend to make different choices for her children than her mother would make for her, but when it comes to her own life she knows (and hates) that she has walked the path that CeCe had carved for her a long time ago.

Headcanons:

i. camille can’t remember a time where her biological father actually acted like a father to her unless you count her recent years as an adult. the only father figure she knew during her formative years was her stepfather, the person who married her mother and adopted camille, it even went as far as taking on his last name. to her, he was her father and she was the little girl he doted on, it was like genetics never mattered. their bond is strong that if he ever divorced her mother she would make sure he was still part of her life, he’s the only person allowed to walk her down the aisle one day.

ii. growing up between the wasps in connecticut and later washington, d.c. camille always knew she was meant to dominate part of society, just like every other member of her family. but to get there she had to complete some other goals first: graduate top of her class in her prep school, form friendships with other well-connected teenagers, have extraordinary extracurriculars and most importantly be the perfect daughter. she completed all of them, but her mental health took a turn for the worse. the problem went ignored, finding ways to escape it and she kept up appearances that way her family would never know there were cracks in her mask. her tendency to escape to cocaine and alcohol left when she got accepted to all the ivies, even if her eyes were only on the big three, the adrenaline rush she felt when she was good enough for them all was greater than drugs could offer.

iii. when she was nine her parents announced that they’d be having a baby. jealousy surged throughout her body because her daddy would finally have a child of his own, she would be replaced. he would love the other baby more than her, so camille distanced herself from both her parents, after all, without her mother there’d be no other baby. her parents didn’t notice the distance because they blamed it on the move and figured she had to adapt to living in a new city without her grandparents to spoil her when they were too busy. camille had no problem finding her place in a new city, she was a little kid prone to make friends with everybody, especially other with parents who rule the capital of the usa. and one day her father figured it all out when she didn’t sound interested in her new sibling and made her talk because he didn’t want his little girl to be afraid to talk to him. a few promises were made and everything went back to normal, the situation was even better when her little brother was born. camille became very protective of him.

iv. a gifted child who picked up most things easily: languages, sports and some music instruments but when something didn’t go her way camille also angered easily. throwing things on the ground; watching them shatter and taking pleasure in it until she felt calm. she liked destroying pretty things because she never got the opportunity to destroy herself, to find her own person in her ruins.

v. graduated yale law school with summa cum laude, with highest praise, and job offers were lining up the streets for camille. her plan was always to become a legal representative of the prosecution, but when her biological father offered her a corporate job in his company she couldn’t refuse. it would mean getting to know the person who shared her dna beyond the things she found while growing up. she did ignore the fact that he wanted to be her father because she already had one and wouldn’t trade him for the world. her own biological father made his choice when he ran off, and all the money he offered her mother or the days he played her cool bachelor uncle weren’t enough, he only wanted her because he couldn’t have her as his daughter. so she accepted the job and all the opportunities it came with and made it clear he wasn’t her father, just some sperm donor, but along the way, her walls started to crumble. a fact that made her hate herself a little more.

vi. she dreads the day she’ll be married to her fiance when she goes from independent woman to trophy wife in a matter of seconds. she loves him, or at least she thinks she does. camille knows there was a moment in her life where she was in love with him: hopelessly, devotedly, yet, somehow she didn’t feel the same anymore. was it the natural way of things? or will it be the beginning of the end?

ONE. Despite being born and brought up in a silver spoon kind of life, Thomas never really let it get to his head, especially as a child. When he was younger, he would be found roaming around the Upper East Side with any of his classmates, whether they were from the same background as him or not and he went out of his way to stand up to those that got mocked for not having money. He’s kept that basic trait of not letting money get to this head.

TWO. Thomas has a photographic memory. Due to that, Thomas has always found school to be incredibly easy. Although he didn’t slack off nor did he skip on any assignments, he didn’t worry about the exams as much as his fellow classmates did. Whereas they had to memorize and then understand what they had just memorized, Thomas would study in half the time since his memory helped him do the first step without even trying. Some of his friends told him that he could actually charge others for his explanations, as well as trying to influence him to somehow help others cheat —- however, Thomas never did either, as he would rather help people in an honest way and without charging them for it.

THREE. Since he had quite a bit of free time in high school, more often than not having nothing to do while others crammed for their exams, Thomas took up kickboxing as a way to pass the time. However, he quickly grew attached to it and now he cannot live without it. Whether it’s late at night, early in the morning or Sunday afternoon, he’ll go to the gym to get some training in, should he need to let off some steam. He’s never been interested in competing in it, though, and he cannot imagine himself doing so ever. Thomas does kickboxing because he enjoys it and not because he wants to make a career out of it.

FOUR. From a young age, Thomas’ father, Henri, and his mother, Carla, have always told him that he was meant to keep the Reid legacy going and take over the company when they retired. What they shared, he’d have all to himself (and a significant other, his mother hoped) and he knew the pressure was through the roof for him to be as good as his parents are. From a young age, he showed willpower that could not be taught and so he created a deal with his parents when he was fifteen: he’d hear all they had to teach him, he’d work at the company during school breaks to learn the ropes if they let him study what he wanted to study. He’s always wanted to be a lawyer but his dad wanted him to work at the company so they reached a compromise —- and the deal was accepted. Thomas went to Harvard Law and when he returned, graduating at twenty-five, he started working at his family’s company as C.O.O., all the while maintaining a Law side-job so he won’t grow rusty.

FIVE. Thomas hasn’t had that many relationships; he’s had flings and one night stands (that he respects and doesn’t bail on come morning unless that’s what the other wants) but he’s not a fan of having an actual relationship. The only two real and serious relationships he had were in high school, which was his first love and another in college. In between, he’s had a few flings and short-lived relationships but none that will actually stick to his mind and have him think about it for years to come.

SIX. Thomas has two personalities: his “regular” personality and his “business” personality. The latter is a lot more confident and ruthless, with no time to waste and fearless to the point of others thinking he’s being reckless when he’s really playing the long game. This personality only comes out when he needs it to or when he’s making an important deal for a company that he’s meant to inherit; although, neither personality loses his natural charm.

Headcanons:

i. Lola, despite being both a Rhodes and a van der Woodsen, didn’t grow up nearly as comfortable as the rest of her family did, or even in Manhattan. Her mother, Carol Rhodes, was estranged from her family and therefore not entitled to any of their wealth. Carol decided to raise her daughter away from the Upper East Side and chose Miami instead. Lola grew up to be very hardworking and worked a variety of jobs, from waitressing to grocery clerk. She wasn’t brought up expecting things to be handed to her. ii. From a very young age, her dream was to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a movie star. Getting there obviously wasn’t a walk in the park. With her limited funds, all the money Lola made went towards acting classes. That’s where she met Ivy Dickens, another aspiring actress. iii. Her last year of high school, Lola applied to Juilliard thinking nothing would come of it. Surprisingly, her audition got her in and she was even offered a scholarship that covered most of her tuition. Manhattan, however, had always been off-limits to her. Her entire childhood, Carol made it clear she wasn’t to step foot in the Big Apple. She didn’t want her daughter anywhere near her family and the pull of the Upper East Side. Thinking she had no other options, Lola lied to her mother and told her she was attending Michigan State University. iv. Lola might’ve gotten away with it if it weren’t for her mother’s scheme to get her daughter’s inheritance money with the help of Ivy Dickens. Despite trying her hardest to stay away from the Upper East Side, Lola eventually ended up getting mixed up with Nate Archibald after meeting him at a party she catered at. A bunch of events led her to figure out that Ivy Dickens was pretending to be her and that Carol was the one who orchestrated the whole thing in order to get the money that was rightfully Lola’s. To make things even more traumatic, she also learned that Serena was actually her sister and not her cousin. She was the result of an affair between William van der Woodsen and Carol. v. While she’s been away, Lola has made quite the name for herself in Hollywood. She’s gotten multiple roles that have led her to be nominated for an Oscar just the previous year. Her career is still young, but she’s very careful with what movies and series she chooses to act in and, thankfully, has a great team behind her. vi. Given her job, it should come as no surprise that Lola has no found herself back in Manhattan to film a new limited series. She hasn’t warned Serena or Nate of her return and doesn’t plan to for now. The idea of seeing them again and risking getting swept up in the Upper East Side’s drama is terrifying, but she hopes Manhattan is big enough for her never to run into her past again.
