Caroline had time to process the events of the ball, and put some distance from it. After all the main emotions have faded, the only one she felt now was embarrassment about the way she’d acted towards Lark. She knew now Lark was only trying to help; it wasn’t her fault she was blind-sided by Caroline’s feelings that night. She wanted to see Lark face to face to try and make things right, but, looking on the calendar, today the twins were supposed to till the soil to prepare for seed planting. She tapped the counter, considering, then picked up her phone and sent a text to her friend. “Hey Lark, are you busy today? Would you like to come over and hang out?” This hanging out would likely involve sitting in a dusty tractor, but Lark didn’t have to take part in that if she didn’t want to. In the meantime, Caroline got to work making blueberry pancakes for the morning. It was early, she didn’t expect Lark to answer for a while. Or at all, if she’d decided she didn’t want anything to do with Caroline anymore.
