Caroline Day never intended to become a part of the Shadow World. She and her twin brother, Thomas, were born in Atlanta to an epidemiologist mother and teacher father.  Vincent and Khrystyna were normal mundanes who gave their children a stable childhood, never suspecting that anything was out-of-the-ordinary. Unbeknownst to them, however, the twins had the Sight. When they were small, the two often spoke about the supernatural things that they saw, but their parents wrote it off as make-believe, and something to be grown out of.  In a way, they were right. Caroline, despite her natural curiosity, learned to rationalize her glimpses into the Shadow World, forgetting that those childhood games weren’t imaginary. She grew up just like she would have without the Sight — graduating high school, going off to college, and eventually returning home to Atlanta to take a job as an investigative journalist, while Tom moved to New York.

Things seemed to be going smoothly. But in the past year, just as Jonathan Morgenstern returned and began to build up his forces, Caroline had felt a growing sense of unease. She had chalked it up to happenings in her own life, from a breakup to restlessness at her job. But Tom had felt it too. The last time they met, in July, he had seemed anxious and unusually distant. Out of the blue, he had asked Caroline whether she believed in the supernatural. Assuming it was a joke — after all, Tom had always been the sensible, scientifically minded type — she laughed, and eventually he did too. But the question had stuck with her, along with a feeling that something just wasn’t right. Caroline would realize why just a week later, when she had a terrifying run in with a demon.  That night, panicked and suddenly sure that Tom hadn’t been joking, she called her brother. He didn’t pick up, but his roommate did, explaining that Tom hadn’t been home in two days, and that he was about to file a missing person report.

Grappling with her twin’s disappearance was difficult enough in itself, but rearranging her worldview to accommodate the Shadow World — including the bizarre realization that her aunt was married to a werewolf — made the situation even more overwhelming. Caroline is convinced that Tom did not go missing by mundane means, and his behavior at their last meeting makes her suspect that he had an inkling something bad was going to happen. She’s in the Institute in hope of answers — she had already planned to move to New York City, but her uncle had suggested taking advantage of the recent decree. So far, the Shadow World has felt surreal and terrifying...but also captivating, and Caroline has never been one to scare easily.
