Are we far enough in recovery that I can say something controversial?
The virus was a huge blessing in my life
I've been homebound for 8+ years and the whole world suddenly getting locked down gave me a lot of opportunities to play (both in games and social media) with people but more importantly I felt like I related to the rest of the world the first time in my life. I experienced camaraderie in a whole new way.
Abled people finally began to understand a little bit of what my life is like. I was enjoying this silently but then people in my life started to come to that realization on their own. They told me that they now understand why being homebound has had such an effect on my mental health and that they were sorry. Not "I'm sorry you are in a wheelchair" which is one of the things that offends me the most but, "I'm sorry that the world does this to you." And I genuinely don't think I've ever been so touched in my whole life.
Finally, the stimulus money was like winning the lottery and thankfully I live in California so we might get more. Living on disability is impossible without local charities and friends to support you. I intellectually understand that $600 is nothing but it gave me a chance to get restaurant food delivered and it felt absolutely decadent.
I worry about how I'm going to handle everything getting back to normal but I'm thankful it is. I genuinely don't like to see people suffer and the death toll is inconceivable. I just hope that those of you who learned something this past year don't forgot
