a year of car ownership confessions — everything i did wrong and when i finally fixed it
okay so i have been meaning to write this for a while.
i am not a car person. i have never been a car person. i bought my i20 last november because the bus situation in my part of jaipur is genuinely not workable for my commute and i needed a practical solution.
what i did not expect was how much there is to know about keeping a car in jaipur specifically. i thought i knew. i did not know.
here is the full confession.
november — bought the car
drove it home from the showroom in mansarovar. parked it in the society. sat in it for a bit just appreciating it. paint was perfect. smelled exactly like a new car should.
set a mental note to wash it regularly. felt confident about this.
december — introduced to the colony stall
the guy who washes cars in my society knocked on my door the first week. ₹80 per wash, comes every morning. i signed up immediately because this was exactly the low-effort solution i was looking for.
did not know this was a mistake. thought i was being responsible.
january and february — everything seemed fine
car looked clean most of the time. i was washing it twice a week. felt like i was on top of it.
in retrospect — the colony stall cloth was already scratching the paint with every wipe. i could not see individual scratches. the aggregate damage was accumulating.
also — interior. i vacuumed it once with the household vacuum. once. the dust that was working into the seat fabric daily was being addressed by: nothing.
march — first jaipur summer warning signs
temperatures started climbing. i noticed the car felt hot when i got in even with windows cracked. started parking in shade where possible.
did not connect this to dashboard maintenance at all. the dashboard was baking at 65°C every day in the office parking and i had never conditioned it once.
april and may — the heat arrived properly
the AC was running constantly. every single trip, windows up, AC at maximum.
what i did not know: the AC ducts had been accumulating particulate matter since november. fine jaipur silica passing through the cabin filter, settling in the ductwork, getting recirculated. the AC had a slight quality to it i could not name. i just assumed jaipur AC always felt like this.
also — that was not how jaipur AC was supposed to feel. that was my dirty ducts.
june — a friend said something
a friend got in my car for a drive to civil lines. within five minutes she mentioned that the AC smelled a little off.
i told her it was just jaipur air. she gave me the look.
i thought about it later. the car was seven months old. the AC had never been cleaned. the interior had been vacuumed once. the seats had accumulated seven months of daily use.
july — the monsoon and the bonnet
first proper monsoon rain. the car got muddy. i waited four days and then called the colony stall guy.
he wiped the mud off with the same cloth he uses for everything. the mud had been sitting on warm paint for four days and had partially bonded. the wiping left something. i noticed it on the bonnet. not a scratch exactly. just a flat area that caught light differently.
i googled it. found out about micro-scratching. found out about grit in roadside cloths. found out what i had been doing to the paint since december.
august — found CarCare
was complaining about the bonnet situation to a colleague. she mentioned CarCare. doorstep service. proper microfiber cloth. fixed schedule. no arranging required each time.
i messaged them. told them my i20 and that i was in sodala. they confirmed and sorted a schedule.
booked a single foam wash first because i wanted to see the quality before committing. guy came to the society parking. had actual foam equipment, multiple clean cloths. took forty minutes. walked around the car after.
the bonnet looked better. not fixed — the existing damage from eight months of roadside washing was still there. but clean in a way that showed what the paint was actually supposed to look like.
subscribed to the daily cleaning package the same day. ₹699 a month for the i20.
september to present — what is different
alternate days they come and do the exterior properly. once a week full interior — and this is the thing — proper vacuum into the seat fabric, dashboard conditioned, AC vents cleaned inside not just the surface, mats out and done separately.
the AC smell went away after the first proper interior session. my friend got in again last month and said the car smelled clean. i did not tell her how recently i had fixed the situation that she had correctly identified three months earlier.
the paint on the bonnet has not gotten worse since august. the existing micro-scratch damage is what it is. but it stopped accumulating.
the dashboard has not developed any new cracks. the ones that were starting to show from the summer have not progressed.
what i would tell november-me
the colony stall is damaging your paint every time he comes. sign him up for one car, yours, and switch to proper service immediately.
condition the dashboard before the first summer. not during. not after you see the first crack.
clean the AC vents properly. they are not cleaning themselves and the thing you cannot smell anymore is still there.
jaipur is a different category of environment for cars than wherever you read car maintenance advice that was written for. the dust settles overnight every night. the heat is serious. the monsoon mud bonds differently. everything needs to happen more frequently and more correctly than you assume.
the subscription is ₹699 a month. it is less than what i was spending on the colony stall and infinitely better. i wish i had started in december.
october — the resale calculation i did out of curiosity
a colleague sold his WagonR after three years. disappointed with the price. buyer objected to worn paint and interior smell.
if i had sold in august — same story. one month of proper maintenance does not undo eight months of wrong maintenance. but it stops the progression. by sale time the damage from those first months will be fixed, not still growing.
what i did not expect — the mental thing
i knew the paint would stop getting worse. i knew the interior would smell better. those were the predictable outcomes.
what i did not predict was how much mental space the car had been occupying.
background hum. should wash it properly. interior getting bad. keep meaning to deal with the bonnet thing. always on the list, never at the top.
that is gone now. car is handled. i do not think about it.
₹699 a month. at my parking. one WhatsApp message to set up.
the numbers for anyone calculating
subscription: ₹699/month for hatchbacks and sedans. ₹799 mid-size SUVs. ₹899 for 7-seaters.
alternate-day exterior wipe, weekly full interior. at your society or office parking.
single foam wash ₹399 to start. that is what i did.
