1912 -- the Carpathias captain Arthur Rostron is awarded for his effort by Margaret Brown, the unsinkable Molly Brown.
The Tatras Poland's tallest peaks congregate in the south of the country, forming the geography imposed frontier with Slovakia as part of the Western Carpathians chain, with whom they are shared. They peak at 2,655 metres at Mt Gerlach and the national park that encompasses them is part of UNECO's world network of biosphere reserves and are on the tentative list for world heritage status. They owe their uplift to the ongoing collision of Africa with Europe, and their shape to the ice ages, when glaciers ploughed out valleys and pulverised the rocks, later depositing the products as moraines. Wildlife in the national park includes varied species of deer, chamois (mountain goats), brown bears, wolves and wild boar, making them representative of a fauna lost or endangered in most other parts of Europe.
