Right off the bat here is me sounding pretentious, I am recommending a band (Carrollhood) that most of you have probably never have heard of. While you may have never heard of Carrollhood you have most likely heard of the previous bands the members of this band have all been apart of. Carrollhood is made up of Tim Mctague of UnderØath, Nate Young of Anberlin and Reed Murray of Say Anything.
Now that I have listed off who all is in the band you would expect that you would be getting some sort of post-hardcore or alternative rock band, but that is far from what they are. I would describe the sound of Carrollhood on this release as Synth-Pop. The vocals are a haunting and have effects on them, while the instrumentation is mostly heavily synth driven there are moments when Tim’s guitar playing shines through and leads the music. The drums on the record are a mix of synth based samples and live drums. There is very much a darkwave and dream pop influence on this record. The record lyrically is dark and touches on themes such as questioning religion and how one is most vulnerable in the act of sex.
The record sonically fits more where Alternative music has been going in the past few years, sonically based off this record it wouldn’t be surprising to see Carrollhood playing at festivals like Coachella or Osheaga not Warped Tour where all these musicians came from. I would say normally I would recommend one song to listen to check them out but this is my first post so there is no real precedent and this album/EP is only 21 minutes long so just take the time to listen to this whole album and soak it in.
Halt And Catch Fire
AMC, Finale has aired all 4 season available on Netflix (at least in Canada)
I never watched this show when it was on air, so maybe I am part of the problem of why it eventually ended. But in my defence one of the 2 cable logins I use to watch TV does subscribe to AMC so if I had know how good it was I would have watched it. So I think right around when the finale aired my buddy Nick was tweeting how good it was so I thought maybe i’ll finally check it out. So in the month or so after the finale i watched the first 3 seasons, then in December when Netflix got season 4 I started watching it and I finished the show about an hour before I started writing this.
In reading about the show people called the show somewhat of a spiritual successor to Mad Men. After finishing it I could see why it got that comparison, It is a period piece about a business. Halt And Catch Fire is about the tech business it starts out set in 1983 in Texas and by its end in late 1994/ early 1995 it has moved its setting to Silicon Valley in California.
It was an interesting show that showed the progression of tech those 12 years through the lens of people who were running companies that were always a step behind their real life successful counterparts. Also the show has very dominant and strong female leads, which is very cool especially based off the industry it is set about and the time period probably would have not been as likely the norm. Over the course of the 4 seasons because of the writing on the show the viewer becomes attached to all the characters despite all of them being flawed and we feel for them in their success and failure. The show is easier to watch if you have a knowledge of the tech industry but anyone can identify and relate to the personal struggles of the cast.
The show has 40 episodes and on average the episodes clock in at just over 40 minutes so it’s not hard to digest. I would totally recommend this show for everyone to watch.
@carrollhood crushing. @timmctague is an inspiring gentleman. Great to hang with @thejagecage too. #newmusic #nashville #carrollhood (at Mercy Lounge)
