He left the University of Washington to join the Marine Corps in 1942, where he served as a radioman, gunner and mechanic during World War II. Van Winkle then studied at Everett Junior College before transferring back to university. He reenlisted in the Marine Corps in 1948. In August 1950, Van Winkle deployed to Korea, where he was wounded in combat. His Medal of Honor citation states that he “…boldly spearheaded a determined attack through withering fire against hostile frontal positions and, though he and all the others who charged with him were wounded, succeeded in enabling his platoon to gain the fire superiority and the opportunity to reorganize,” and that despite being “…wounded a second time when a direct hit in the chest from a hostile hand grenade caused serious and painful wounds, he staunchly refused evacuation and continued to shout orders and words of encouragement to his depleted and battered platoon.” He left service in 1951 but was recalled a year later, then attended The Basic School at Quantico, Virginia, and was promoted to captain in 1954. From 1955-1958, he served at Marine Corps Recruiting Station Indianapolis. In 1958, he became commanding officer of the Marine Detachment aboard USS Newport News. He received a B.A. in History from the University of Washington in 1961 and then transferred to Hawaii to serve as a company commander. In 1962, Van Winkle established a Brigade Guerrilla Warfare School. He was promoted to major in August and to lieutenant colonel in 1967. He served in the Vietnam War from August 1967 to September 1968. Over his career, he earned the Medal of Honor, a Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V,” a Gold Star, and a Purple Heart. Van Winkle died in 1986, and his ashes were scattered at sea. There is a memorial dedicated to him at Sitka National Cemetery in Juneau, Alaska. We honor his service. #HonoringVets #Veterans #MemorialMay #CarryTheLoad https://www.instagram.com/p/CdghpxsJBw4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

After their release, his family moved to Chicago before eventually settling in California. Okamoto attended the University of Southern California (USC) on scholarship to pursue a bachelor’s in international relations. While at USC, he joined the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) as the program’s first non-UCLA student and was commissioned a second lieutenant. After graduation, he attended ranger school. Okamoto became the intelligence-liaison officer for the Phoenix Program. He was attached to Company B of the 2nd Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, 27th Infantry Regiment. In August 1968, Okamoto was the platoon leader of an infantry unit near Dầu Tiếng, Vietnam. When a ground attack was launched in the night by enemy forces, compromising the perimeter, Okamoto led five men to restore it. Under heavy fire, Okamoto manned a machine gun on a damaged personnel carrier before running to a second and third carrier when each gun ran out of ammunition. Despite being injured by a grenade, he kept fighting until the battle’s end. He was assigned to the Berlin Brigade for the rest of the war. Okamoto was the most decorated living Japanese American Vietnam Veteran. He received a Distinguished Service Cross, a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, three Purple Hearts and a Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He was also the fourth Japanese American to be inducted into the Ranger Hall of Fame in September 2007. After retirement, Okamoto returned to USC to earn a law degree and was later appointed to the Los Angeles County Superior Court in April 2002. He was among the founders of the Japanese American Bar Association and helped establish the Japanese American Vietnam War Veterans Memorial at the National Japanese American Veterans Memorial Court. He was also the author of two novels, with one being about the Vietnam War. Okamoto died in September 2020 and is buried at Green Hills Cemetery in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. #HonoringVets #Veterans #CarryTheLoad #MemorialMay https://www.instagram.com/p/CdQ6SATpmrn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
