For years, they both ignored the hints of dark green scenery && deep blue lagoons, until, with a harsh reality settling across the town, they couldn’t anymore.

It came through in rapid, chronological memories—he compared them to episodes upon episodes they’d watched together—, and each one shot every single member in the town with a new bullet of pain. Carter was one of the lucky ones who happened to be inside when it all rushed in, but he felt the farthest from lucky he’d ever been. A near shriek from Ariel (Charlotte? Blue?) rang through the house less than a second after everything registered. Gray eyes went wide, long limbs practically went limp, and it felt like his brain grew twice as large with all the years upon years of memories that flooded in. 

Neverland. An island full of terror and wonder in equal measure. An island he’d called home. 

It all seemed so much darker now than it had before. What had, at the time, seemed like a paradise dulled in comparison to Storybrooke. He could’ve laughed at the irony, really. Years of searching for a truest believer with Pan when he’d been dumped right into his hometown without a clue, and now that he knew, it didn’t even matter. 

He thought of Isaac. Peter Pan. His best friend still, of course, but he’d been so much more on Neverland, hadn’t he? He’d been everything. Now, it was a matter of what would stay and what would go. He’d still be a best friend, a brother, even, but would about a leader? On the island, Peter had been the closest thing to a father figure he’d known, as strange as it seemed. So, what was he now? 

The cringe couldn’t be held back when he thought of Alissa. Back when she was Wendy and he was Felix, he knew how much she’d meant to Peter. He’d cared too much about Peter and Peter had cared too much about Wendy for Felix to even suggest such a thing, but it was all so different now. They hadn’t been Wendy or Felix, they’d been Alissa and Carter. They’d been together, without him. So, what happened now? 

Felix’s ideals and Carter’s wants were at war, but he knew neither would win. There was only one way to end the battle. He didn’t even glance the twins’ way as he went out the door.

It was only a block to the Day’s house and it felt too long and too short all at once, but soon enough he was there at the door. He knocked twice and it was Dylan who answered. He wondered for a moment if he’d go by Michael now. He swore he’d never seen a face so usually full of happiness and light so angry and dark. The Darling boy didn’t look back, he glared back.

"What?" A voice so full of hatred didn’t suit the boy.

"Is Alissa here?"

"I doubt she wants to see you."

"Is Alissa here?"

"You can’t come in."

"Fuck, Dylan, then at least tell her to come to the fucking door." 

The words seemed to hit him like a slap in the face, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t respond. “Why do you need to see her so badly?”

Carter almost scoffed and when he spoke, he did it bluntly, “I wanted to end it before it was too late. Maybe you could pass that message along for me.” Figuring that hearing it from her brother would hurt Alissa less anyway, Carter practically ran back to his house.
