tbh i get that representation for one marginalized group is hardly representation for all, and i'm always excited to see asams rep'ed in my media, and i'll always push for more asam representation

but i DO sympathize with and relate to non-asian people of color who are on my screen, they DO count as positive 'points' that contribute to my decision to watch and support a show, i can relate to the alienation and oppression they experience in canon and in fandom. and for shows that skip over the issue because not every character of color needs to have a Very Special Arc about racism, i can also relate to carefree women of color doing their own thing

at the same time, i'm happy seeing poc represented at all, yknow?

empire doesn't need asian americans for me to be like FUCK YES THIS SHOW, htgawm's single asian tech nerd who only exists as a plot device to fuck with a white dude's self esteem is mildly discomfitting, but it pales in comparison to seeing complex, compelling black women on screen with fears and insecurities and triumphs. brooklyn nine-nine's only recurring east asian dude (and afaik, only asian dude at all) basically only gets called in to do computer stuff, but you're not gonna take a team of two high-ranking black men, one of whom is gay, and two latina detectives away from me

like lol i've had white people tell me that a single woman of color (mako mori) in pacific rim's canon is enough, why does anyone have to defend the minor ones who are only mentioned offhandedly in canon (vanessa gottlieb)??? and i've ALSO had white people tell me that they can't relate to stacker & mako's disabilities, and why should they be expected to when their own is more similar to hermann or newt's???

tl;dr i have no idea where i was going with this, just that it's awfully fuckin weird that white activism expects us to be magnaminous w/ our support for white people who experience any other axis of marginalization, but refuse to expend even the remotest scrap of effort even for people of color who experience the same kind of oppression

like they'll want us to support feminism while they actively throw women of color under the bus, lgbtq whites demand effort and compliance from qpoc but don't even make a peep when the vast majority of homophobic and transmisogynistic violence against lgbtq individuals occurs against people of color (unless they're using that statistic to make the whites sound more vulnerable), we're expected to sympathize with and accommodate white characters' disabilities but the disabilities of people of color 'aren't incredibly important'

yknow who has been there for every step tho? other women of color.

so yeah, i do feel solidarity with any woc on my screen and i do feel represented by woc of any group. not necessarily in the most ideally specific way possible, but it's still a win for me
