Her cell phone ringtone spoke rather than rang. It was at half-volume, the phone skittering on the glass countertop as it vibrated in case she missed the robotic declaration.

It was the middle of the day which wasn’t out of all normal to receive a call from Karen. Typically lunch chats were scheduled beforehand, but maybe this was impromptu?

“I can do that – I just started my lunch break.”

Karen’s voice sounded a little more urgent than a coffee run. Milla focused on the background noises for a second to gauge where she was before asking. If either of them called to be picked up it usually meant because backup was needed. Sometimes just as a fellow woman to walk home from Josie’s with, but other days included finding Karen amid the shipping containers at the docks because she was a little too interested in something rather bad people wished she wouldn’t be.

as a kid, it was no secret that to scarlett, the gifts were one of the best parts of her birthday. however, as she grew up, things changed a little. of course, she still loved receiving gifts, but not necessarily material ones or very expensive things— a cake and music meant much more than anything else. 

scarlett blew out the candles and prepared to cut the cake, her attention largely on maggie. “can i really pick any song i want ?” she smiled and leaned back in her chair for a moment. “do you know any taylor swift songs ? because you can play any of them. and don't worry, i won’t judge. i don’t know how to play, so i really admire everyone that does.”
