Watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind
When I first saw 2001, I was struck by how powerfully each minor piece of it has resonated through every piece of science fiction made since. Watching this is different: I realized that every story of aliens visiting Earth inherits not just small conventions from Close Encounters, but its totality. A quintessential film.
Powerful layers of the hope and fear of learning that there is something more, unfortunately dampened by its shallow women (although Garr brings an impressive sense of tragedy to her family's story). Mind-altering special effects, eye-opening sound design. Close to as beautiful a final sequence as I have ever seen.
All of this pales, in my view, compared to the prayer Spielberg offers.
What if that which took them, one day, brings them back?

He says the sun came out last night. He says it sang to him.
Carry Guffey (Barry) with a great story about a key scene in CE3K.
