An idyllic stream of cold mountain water, running out of a copse of trees that turns into a mysterious fog, decorated with blooming heather, and alive with dippers searching for their lunch. Being the only human here for all this was one of my favorite experiences out in nature in my life. Instantly memorable. Cascades, July 2020.

May 1980, the lovely Mount Saint Helens erupted.
Photographer Reid Blackburn chose to stay one day longer than he was assigned, and his body was found buried in ash up to the windows of his Volvo 144.
