Crash 1996
Crash 1886 where they are aroused by carriage collisions
Burning Car, 1984, Jay Wolke
you watch a car commercial and the car is presented as a masculinity carapace and this idea persists as if we don’t all know that the car is actually a second womb and every arrival + subsequent exit from the vehicle is a rebirth — it’s obvious why straight men feel such an attachment, and doubly obvious why they don’t want you to know. the trained eye can locate the mother wound of every car driver within seconds.
May 1980, the lovely Mount Saint Helens erupted.
Photographer Reid Blackburn chose to stay one day longer than he was assigned, and his body was found buried in ash up to the windows of his Volvo 144.
Digital painting by me, inspired by Pete Lipman's photo.
can anyone tell me the watch order for every movie ever so i can understand all references and homages
@dionrevel PLEASE share the link.
Lol sure!!
For movies, here is the beginner's list:
Beginner's guide for getting in the loop.
And the more advanced list:
Advanced guide to getting in the loop. Supplementary to "Civilization Essentials." If a movie is on this list, then it has one of these: -Po
Not all these movies are necessarily good, but the ones that gave me small pop culture epiphanies. It made me realize that 30%-40% of the jokes from modern sitcoms are references/parodies- and these movies are their source material.
^^ This is also true for socializing. So many people I thought were naturally funny were just doing movie bits.
[I actually do have a job, I am just a big fan of lists and graphs and flow charts etc.]
Got a few requests, so if anybody is interested, here are the posts for In the Loop books and music :D :
Books
Music
In the Loop Books!
Here is my list of books that have helped me understand pop culture references and have better understanding of history. Maybe it's just because I hang around nerds, but it also made me able to participate in a coherent conversation about more than like...one topic lol.
Full In the Loop:
Google doc
Goodreads (tryna wean myself off this site lol. highly recommend storygraph as an alternative though it doesn't have lists.)
Fable
I haven't finished reading 100% of them, but even what I've read so far has made me realize how many plots of modern shows and movies + jokes are just adaptations and references. Not even in disguise either. I actually went back and re-watched Community because of this lmao.
The list also gave me an ancient civilizations special interest, so how could I leave these out: (All included the Google doc above too)
Mesopotamia
Goodreads
Fable
Egypt

you take billions of touchstarved apes. you make their main source of connection hurdling down parallel cement lines in personal incubators. the windows and sensors an extension of the eyes, the steel the skin, and any touch meaning pain or fatality. then you expect them not to see the mirage of sex reflected in the wires and steel.
And posting my In the Loop movies list, I got a few requests for the others. So I'd like to present...
In The Loop Music!!!
Since 2021, I've used this list to help me feel more culturally present and able to hold a conversation about music for more than 3 seconds.
#1 for the OG GOATS.
Starting with the classics like Bach before going into early 20th century artists like Rosetta Tharpe who basically invented modern music. You NEED to know these people in order to spot homages (or plagiarism) in newer songs.
2nd playlist for the Modern Essentials
These are the songs that have somehow reached every part of the planet except under your little rock. Or the artists you've heard of but don't even know where to start!
And the Masterlist
More comprehensive. Background descriptions and includes artists not on the playlist. See where your fav ended up!!
Rules: 3 top music videos 10 top songs for artists in category 1 5 top songs for category 2 2 top songs for category 3 Listen to the setlist
For me, this list has been my social ladder. I've found that even just being AWARE of the zeitgeist automatically puts you at a huge advantage. Even if it's not your style, knowing popular culture gives you a foothold to criticize it intelligently.

this is awkward but....... an obsession with avoiding trendiness still forces your to pay attention to trends. yall drop an interest/band/song/aesthetic/WHATEVER at the drop of a hat when others start talking about it. the problem was never the topics themselves, but that yall HATE letting people collectively learn about new things without immediately looking down on them as "a member of the masses." sometimes your interests will align with what suddenly resonates with lots of other people too, and the test of if you're a real one is if you let it stay your interest after the "trend" has faded into "cringe" territory. the trend followers and the anti-trend followers will fail this test in equal measure.
