“Keep looking. He’s certainly got a lot to hide in them; I wouldn’t be surprised if he hid them someplace clever.”
Cruz and Casey both had been investigating the house of Mr. K-- at that particular soiree, but Cruz was beginning to wonder if it was a good idea to work together after all. En was nervous about it -- one person missing from the ballroom floor may not be missed, but two -- one of which rather prominent in the Neath -- that might not go over as well. Cruz was keeping watch, ens remaining eye trained through the gap in the door as Casey carefully searched through the gentleman’s personal documents for the incriminating correspondence.
It wasn’t long before Cruz’s fears were proven right -- a pair of servants down the hallway.
“Someone’s coming,” Cruz whispered urgently.
“What? I’m almost --” Casey snapped the drawer they were looking into shut, rummaging through another
“We have to hide.”
Casey snorted. “Good luck with that, big guy.”
“Is now really the time for witty remarks?” Cruz let out an exasperated hiss, moving away from the door. “If we get caught, he’s going to hand us right over to the--”
“I have an idea. C’mere.”
“What are you--”
Without any further warning, Casey grabbed en by the wrist and pulled them close with strength that was somehow still surprising coming from their small frame. In the same smooth motion, Casey spun en so their backside hit the desk, arms bracketing en in place, and by the time the door swung open, they were kissing Cruz full on the mouth.
Cruz tried to act shocked at the intrusion -- it wasn’t hard, given that ens head was still spinning at the last minute maneuver. En squawked indignantly, patting at the lipstick Casey had smudged as they whipped around to face the door, and quite convincingly sputtered, “Weren’t either of you taught to *knock?!”*
