Koolie Mudi Vizla

I can most definitely say I’ve never met a Koolie or Mudi; as for Vizsla, I don’t remember meeting one.

Koolie - an Australian herding breed which I’m down with, I love Heelers so this guy isn’t to far of a stretch. From internet knowledge of the breed (which is very limited, literally just Googled it), they seem smart and like all around good dogs. Would I own one? They are pretty rare in the US, so it’d be a slim chance. But I love herding breeds more than any group, so, hypothetically, it could be a possibility.

Mudi - Another herder, and sporty. Have seen a couple people on here with them and they are super photogenic xD Again, limited internet knowledge, and they are related to a Puli which I would have never guessed. Would I own one? I like the sportiness, and the fact they are intelligent. So again, hypothetically speaking, if given the chance, maybe! As stated above, a rare breed here.

Vizsla - I have a friend who keeps telling me I look like I would own one. Hunting breed who can both point and retrieve, and I like dogs who retrieve. Their temperament seems a little similar to my dog’s (Rooney) in a sense, handler soft and craves attention. Would I own one? Probably not. If they are anything like Rooney, I may struggle. I like a dog who will bounce back if I make a mistake in training, or even step on a paw by accident.

This game was harder than I was expecting! Threw two breeds at me that I knew next to nothing about, and one just a small bit. But I liked it, got to learn something new! Guess I need to pull myself out of the GSD pit once in a while lol. Thank you for the ask :D

Become interested in disc recently. Kind of wondering how/where to start. Good breeds to look into? I'm 4'10/100lbs so doing disc with my German shepherd sounds like a recipe for ouch. Any idiots guide out there?

I'd suggest starting by going out and buying a dog-safe disc or 12, going out to a field without your dog and start throwing at a target. Not having a dog there makes it a lot easier to focus on what you are doing and to improve your game (which will eventually make it easier for your pup). For every hour I practice with my dog, I practice 2 hours by myself.

I really like the bedo drill as a how-to for throwing - it basically teaches you how to throw a backhand through back-chaining. For other throws Expert village on youtube has good tutorials though a lot of it is just you goofing off with a disc and seeing what works.

As for which breeds to look into, I'm a firm believer in the breed someone should get to do a sport is the breed that best suits their lifestyle without the sport. German shepherds are perfectly capable of doing disc. You won't want to vault them, of course, but vaults, rebounds, launches and the like aren't required for freestyle and there are a lot of games where you aren't doing freestyle stuff anyways.

Congrats on the future puppy! Dantero is top of my list whenever I decide to get a Malinois in the future for IPO. (Years down the line currently waiting on the litter that will hopefully have my IPO male German shepherd). Looking forward to watching your adventures.

Thanks! Yeah, I’ve had my eye on her dogs for years now. I got very lucky, in that I train with a close friend of hers, and that helped her decide to sell such a dog to someone new to Ring. Her dogs have tended to do well in IPO, but are definitely proven in French Ring, as that is the sport she mainly trains for. They are also larger than average and tend to have the forward gripping style (countering into the decoy/helper whereas in IPO they want to counter away). Remarkable dogs though. I get the feeling they would try to do anything you ask.
