You know, one of the main arguments I’ve seen against deancas, was how badly Dean treats Cas, in their general communication and (post-season 8) how he feels about him in his actions. I’ve always explained it away, (I shipped them as “getting there” in canon till late season 9) that Dean can’t deal with his emotions for Cas because he doesn’t understand his attraction so his general shittiness towards him is some playground pigtail pulling and him flippantly acting unconcerned for Cas’ welfare at every turn is because his upstairs brain sees him as some all powerful Angel that can take care of himself. But I just can’t explain in away anymore, the text paired with Jackles’ acting indicates that there is no room in that gigantic heart for seeing Cas as more than a really convenient ally (except when angels mind control him to kill Dean because his love for him is his only true weakness…but that was seasons ago, so) If you take shipping and queetbaiting accusations out they could have had a very private, intimate, profound (lol) friendship but Cas is just a bumbling buffoon lately and Dean is just distant and uncaring. I know him not giving a solitary concern about Cas dying from his fading grace was your concern, and I would have in the past easily found a way to explain it, but it exposes Cas’ use in the show, he’s just dragged along as an afterthought because it’s too late to get rid of Misha and the writers just can’t come to an agreement as to what to do with him, and I am a Cas!girl before a shipper but they snuffed out the spark of that intimacy that made the GA and reviewers for a while go “man, something complex and unexpected is going on with these two and I wanna see what happens here.” That was priceless what they had a few years ago, but there has been no resolution or follow through, just an obvious backpedaling into attempting to make it seem like it was never there at all. My only hope is that they “meanwhile Castiel” so hard in the last two that I can let it go and see that things aren’t going anywhere interesting, and come to terms that Cas is there to keep a chunk of the audience to tell the boys twisted story and not TFW’s.
