Are you a plover lover? Because I sure am! I love them so much I put a bunch of them onto one canvas and made it into a sticker sheet! In case you’re wondering: piping plover, caspian plover, common ringed plover, pied plover, shore plover, and crab plover. June 30, 2018 - Caspian Plover (Charadrius asiaticus)

Breeding in central Asia, especially in the north and east of the Caspian Sea, these plovers migrate up to 6,000 miles (9,656 kilometers) to winter in eastern and Southern Africa. They eat mostly insects and their larvae, often foraging in grasslands, pastures, and urban areas. Nesting in scrapes on the ground lined with grass and stones, females incubate the eggs during the day and males incubate them at night. The chicks can fly about a month after they hatch.

Caspian Plover

Charadrius asiaticus

Charadrius is Greek for curlew, while asiaticus means Asian.

Family: Charadriidae (Plovers, lapwings, and allies)

Fun Fact: “The species concentrates in flocks after breeding but whilst still in its breeding range on the banks of lakes, rivers, water-holes trampled by cattle, and cultivated land.” (IUCN)

Habitat: They are endemic to grasslands, deserts, and fresh water ways of the Middle East, and they winter in Africa.

Ecosystem Role: They help control populations of insects, snails, and can act as seed dispersion, as they occasionally eat seeds.

Conservation Status: Least Concern
