CASS CWIK: ON THE ROCK EP REVIEW
Chicago is known for having an explosive DIY scene, it being home to its fair share of rowdy rockers as well as small labels.
Given this, it's no surprise that up-and-coming indie artist Cass Cwik is not only a Chicago-native but has also released his debut EP, On The Rock, with the well-known and loved Dumpster Tapes. Cwik’s sound is on the softer side but is still just as obscure as what's expected to come from a city filled with inspiration and rich music history.
On The Rock, released this past spring, is a simple six-tracked EP. Each song contributes to an overall pop-rock vibe. The easy and melodic tone, created by a combination of heartfelt vocals and instrumental details, like a steady bass and the occasional use of shakers, makes the EP a relaxed one.
Cwik’s lyrics add to the easy-going feeling, as they’re simple in form but still poignant and universal in meaning. His lyrics are reflective over the ideas of love and life, respectively. Cwik croons ear-catching lines like “you're a sign/that everything's alright” and “where I've been, I've learned a lot/what to say and when to not/what I know, I cannot say/I get funny feelings everyday.”
All things considered, with winter and its cold weather gripping at most of us, this album emanates a lazy summer afternoon feeling that is sure to warm you up.
