it's kind of like i took this class about writing from the perspective of marginalized voices and the professor was telling us how often writers who come from communities that are oppressed in the real world write characters from their communities who lack flaws / humanity / striving because they feel the need to put up a front to show how strong and tough and resilient and great they are whereas people from the dominant can write characters who have their uglinesses more exposed
i feel like it's like that like we're constantly told that we would be better if we looked a certain way and so now we can't help idealize it
