DYING STAR
chapter update
chapter sixteen: for twenty years
The leaves blocked the sun's rays carefully, delicately in a patchwork. Still, they came through in strings like noodles through the holes, warm water pouring through the cracks. Brief glimpses of what remained of summer, holding on by a thread. Red spattered the green in the sway of the wind, and Cassandra struggled to keep her eyes focused on them. Everything seemed to be moving. Swirling away into a thick haze that coated her gaze like frosted glass, and every blink of darkness looked a little different.
Blink. Dirty boots by the door. Her mother always pulled them on outside, on the porch. She said it was to keep the floors clean but Cassandra knew it was to keep Harold from complaining. Blink. A deep basket, woven with dark wicker, endless in the eyes of a five year old. Sometimes, her mother let her carry it until it became too heavy. Blink. The old metal ladder braced against the trunk. It was rusted at the hinges and covered in dried paint and old mud. Blink. Apples in the kitchen sink. The water splashed against them, bright red stark against the pale white of the basin. That was one thing she never forgot. The color. That specific shade of red.
