Designed by the the prolific firm of John Scott & Company, the McAdow House is a Renaissance Revival-style mansion built in 1891 for Perry & Clara McAdow, a couple that made their fortune in the goldmines of Montana. Since 1913, the home has been owned by the First Unitarian-Universalist Church, first as temporary place of worship, then as a parish house when it's building on the corner of Cass and West Forest was completed a few years later. Perry W. (Bud) McAdow, a merchant and entrepreneur, among other things, struck it rich in the gold mines of Montana. McAdow was one of the first settlers of what is now Billings, Montana’s largest city. He also owned a small share in a gold mine. While in Montana, McAdow met Clara Tomlinson, a widow. Clara was also a Detroiter. The two married in 1884. The new Mrs. McAdow was a shrewd businesswoman. She was responsible for handling the couple’s business interests. Clara left Mr. McAdow and returned to Detroit, where she purchased land between Prentis and West Forest along Cass Avenue. Mrs. McAdow hired Scott & Company, one of the city's top architectural firms in the late 19th century, to design a home for her and Mr. McAdow. The couple saw this house as their way of being accepted by Detroit’s high society. Completed in 1891, the McAdow residence is a 2½-story Renaissance Revival mansion built of red brick and brownstone. The exterior features Corinthian columned porches, bay windows, a balustraded parapet and a hipped roof with elaborate gabled dormers and multiple chimneys. Built on the north side is a porte-cochère. The interior is decorated in English Renaissance design with a Elizabethan-style staircase, stained glass, paneling, frescos and other Victorian-era touches. Sadly, in 1896, Clara McAdow died. The home remained privately owned until 1913, when it was sold to the Universalist Church of Our Father congregation. The church used the house as a place of worship until 1916, when the new building at Cass and Forest was completed. William C. Boydell was born in Stafford, England on February 22, 1849. He emigrated with his family to London, Ontario the following year. In 1876, along with older brother John, formed the Boydell Brothers White Lead & Color Works, manufacturers of paints, colored leads, zincs, brushes and general painters' supplies. Designed by the prolific Almon C. Varney, the Boydell residence is 3-story double house erected of brick and limestone. It's a fine example of the Beaux-Arts style as applied to residential. The home is topped with a hipped roof featuring a decorative cornice and brick frieze at the eaves. The house is fronted by two stone terraces. William C. Boydell resided here until his death in 1902. The Boydell family owned the firm until 1959, when it was sold to the Wyandotte Paint Products Company of Michigan. Robert H. Brown was among those who prospered from Detroit’s booming tobacco industry. He, along with his brother John, formed the Brown Brothers Cigar Company. Brown commissioned Almon C. Varney, one of the Detroit’s leading architects at the time, to design a residence for he and his wife Jennie at the intersection of Cass Avenue and West Alexandrine. The home is another fine example of the Queen Anne style typical of the era. In 1916, the William R. Hamilton Funeral Home, established in 1855, purchased the Brown residence. Erik Weisz (Ehrich Weiss), better known to the world as Harry Houdini (1874-1926), is generally considered to be the greatest magician to ever live. On October 24, 1926, despite having a fever of 104 degrees and experiencing severe abdominal pain, Houdini gave what would be his last performance at the long demolished Garrick Theater. During the show, Houdini collapsed and was admitted to old Grace Hospital. Erik Weisz died on October 31, 1926 at 1:26 PM in Room 401 of Grace Hospital’s John R. wing.
